ASU Club Rugby Team Defeats Division I Southwest Texas
The Rugby Club at Angelo State University defeated Division I Southwest Texas State University, 38-12, Saturday and established the tone for the upcoming Division II playoffs.
Rugby Coach Nick Flynn said the game was fast-paced and marked by tough defense and hard running on the part of the ASU backs. Justin Johns scored a hat trick of three tries, helping ensure a victory over Southwest Texas.
Flynn said, "This was the best I have ever seen these guys play. They have a great shot at winning the playoffs."
With this victory over another Division I club, Flynn said ASU is well prepared to take on the Division II clubs at the Texas Rugby Union playoffs in Waco next month. ASU will play Texas Tech first in a two-day playoff tournament, starting March 24th. Those interested in attending the match can obtain directions from the Baylor Rugby homepage at http://www.baylor.edu/~Rugby_Club/map.htm
The victory this weekend brings ASU to an overall record of 15-5-0. ASU's collegiate losses this year include a loss to the Division I collegiate powerhouse Texas A&M and the top two Division II teams, Texas Tech and Baylor. The other two losses both had scores of 15-10 and were against two Men's Division clubs.
Flynn said ASU's record is especially impressive, considering ASU is the second smallest school in Division II and smaller than all of the Division I clubs. On top of that, ASU has only been in collegiate club rugby for two years.
Students interested in playing rugby can show up to practice 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays on the ASU Intramural Fields adjacent to Massie Residence Hall for men. No experience is necessary. For more information, contact Flynn at 942-2181 or Matt Mbanga at 223-1826.
