ASU Defeats UNT Rugby Team

Angelo State University's club Rugby Team defeated the University of North Texas, 37-14, in a Saturday match that mirrored ASU's victory last fall over UNT to claim the championship in the Stephen F. Austin tournament.

Team coach Nick Flynn said the win proved that the victory over the Division I North Texas team in the Stephen F. Austin tournament was not a fluke.

Flynn said the hard-fought game was closer than the score indicated and that the UNT club put in a gritty performance in spite of being pinned in their own end of the field for much of the day and of playing in windy, rainy weather in the upper 30s.

The club will play its next game against a Baylor University team in Waco on Feb. 3.

Students interested in playing rugby can show up to practice 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays on the ASU Intramural Fields adjacent to Massie Residence Hall for men. No experience is necessary. For more information, contact Flynn at 942-2181 or Matt Mbanga at 223-1826.
