ASU's Band Director Emeritus Honored by State Association
Harris Brinson, who served as director of Angelo State University bands for 23 years, has been named Bandmaster of the Year by the Texas Bandmasters Association for 2001.
Brinson retired from ASU in 1997 but remains active in the San Angelo area. In naming him Bandmaster of the Year, the association said he developed the ASU band program "into one of the finest in the state with outstanding concert and marching organizations."
In addition to his time at ASU, Brinson directed bands at Pampa Junior High School and Pampa High School, which received numerous band awards under his leadership. Overall he served as a Texas band director for 32 years, during which time he was active as a conductor, clinician and adjudicator.
He served as president of the Texas Bandmaster's Association and international president of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Association. In the fall, he was honored by the Angelo State University Alumni Association as an outstanding retired faculty member.
Brinson holds both a bachelor of music degree and a master of arts degree from West Texas State University.
