ASU Rugby Club Takes Second in State Tournament
Angelo State University's Rugby Club took second place in Texas this past weekend in a single elimination playoff tournament in Waco.
The ASU Rugby Club defeated Texas Tech, 17-3, on Saturday in a match Coach Nick Flynn described as wet and hard fought with the determination of the ASU players being the key to victory.
On Sunday ASU played host Baylor University for the state championship. Flynn said the game was another hard fought and intense match. The final result was Baylor, 20-11, over ASU.
Flynn said the Baylor team walked away from the match knowing that ASU is a tough club to play. He said that the match was the first time in Texas collegiate rugby history that a two-year-old club like ASU had advanced this far in state competition.
Flynn said the Rugby Club is still practicing on the intramural fields for players who might be interested in learning the game. ASU will attend two tournaments in April, offering potential players the opportunity to determine their interest in playing.
