Students Win 11 Awards for Work on ASU Ram Page

Six students working for the Ram Page, Angelo State University's student newspaper, were honored with 11 awards, including four first place finishes, during this year's Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) convention in Fort Worth.

Photographer Pam Decker, a senior history and government major from Bergen County, N.J., won first place in categories for newspaper feature photo and newspaper sports action photo. Marcie Menhennet, a junior journalism major from Olney, won first place for newspaper sports page design and Julie Schlabs, a senior psychology and journalism major from Hereford, took first place for newspaper feature page design.

Decker also received a second-place award for a newspaper critical review. Schlabs also received an honorable mention for newspaper information graphic and Menhennet received an honorable mention for newspaper sports news.

Other recipients were Andrew Lovell, a journalism major from Odessa, with a second-place finish in newspaper sports column; Bryan Russell, a senior English major from San Angelo, with a third place for general newspaper column and an honorable mention for a newspaper feature story; and Taryn Smith, a senior marketing major from San Antonio, with a third place for single newspaper ad.

The students competed in TIPA's Division 3 competition under the direction of Ram Page faculty adviser Dr. Cathy Johnson, an assistant professor of journalism.

Menhennet is the daughter of Brenda Menhennett of 809 N. Grand, Olney, and Russell Menhennet of Route 2, Olney. Lovell is the son of Lowell and Katherine Lovell of 4836 N. Sierra Ave., Odessa. Russell is the son of Edward and Ida Russell of 3022 Palo Duro, San Angelo. Schlabs is the daughter of Ray and Charla Schlabs of 315 N. Douglas, Hereford. Smith is the daughter of Pam and Jerry Smith of 212 First St., Boerne.
