Darr to Deliver ASU Summer Commencement Address
Cathy Darr, Angelo State University's outgoing Faculty Senate president, will deliver the university's summer commencement address Friday, Aug. 9, when some 230 students receive their diplomas from ASU.
The commencement ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Darr, a professional specialist in the Nursing Department, will continue the long-standing ASU tradition for the Faculty Senate president from the concluding school year to address the summer graduates.
One associate degree, 187 bachelor's degrees and 42 master's degrees are expected to be presented during the ceremony that will mark the first summer commencement in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
Commencement speaker Darr has been a registered nurse since 1978. She joined the ASU faculty in 1996 and holds both her bachelor of science in nursing and her master of science in nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC-SA).
Darr graduated from Pinellis County School of Practical Nursing in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1970, and completed registered nurse education in 1978 at the UTHSC-SA. She received the master of science degree in medical-surgical nursing in 1990.
She served with the Army nurse corps for 18 years in Germany, California and Texas. During her military career she received numerous achievement, commendation and meritorious service medals.
Darr is active in community and university service. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She serves on numerous nursing department and university committees at ASU.
