ASU Rugby Club To Field Two Teams This Year

The Angelo State University Rugby Club will be fielding two teams during the 2002-03 academic year, opening up playing opportunities for more participants, rugby coach Nick Flynn has announced.

The ASU teams will compete in the Texas Rugby Union, which has three divisions DI, DII and DIII. ASU will field squads in the competitive DII and DIII divisions. By fielding two squads, ASU's Rugby Club will be matching participation by such larger schools as Texas A&M and the University of Texas.

These squads are composed of two different rosters, which means that the Rugby Club has 30 starting positions available this year as opposed to the 15 that were offered last year. Since rugby clubs are allowed seven substitutions in a match, this means that ASU teams can accommodate close to 50 players on each squad, Flynn said. As a result, Flynn is inviting individuals affiliated with ASU and interested in playing or learning rugby to contact him at 942-2191, ext. 250.

While DII competitors are limited to five years of eligibility, DIII participants must only be a student enrolled at the participating university. DIII competition will open up rugby competition to more campus participants.

"We had very strong numbers last year, so I am very confident that we will be able to field two competitive sides that will do well in state competition," Flynn said. "Other universities have tried to do this with limited success, but we have learned from their mistakes and we expect to capitalize on this opportunity."

The ASU Rugby Club finished third in the regional competition last year. The club practices 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the ASU Intramural Fields on Jackson Avenue under the direction of Flynn, assistant coach Corry Medulla and team president Will Compton.
