ASU Leadership Camp Scheduled for Youth
Youth who will enter the eighth, ninth or 10th grades this fall are eligible to participate in Angelo State University's Leadership Camp July 15-19 and learn skills that will help them in school as well as in life.
Sponsored by ASU's Division of Continuing Studies, the camp will feature a broad range of activities to introduce participants to differing leadership styles and skills. Activities will assist young people interested in becoming leaders in student council, student organizations, government, business, church or service areas. Governmental, career and entrepreneurial opportunities also will be explored.
Classroom activities will focus on individual goal setting as well as group work. Participants will explore different leadership styles, objectives, communication skills and problem solving. By participating in field trips, youth can observe community leaders in action and interact with role models who will share their leadership expertise and insights.
In addition to classroom exercises and field trips, students will complete a group service project and gain first-hand experience in identifying community needs and in building a leadership model/project to address those needs. Skills gained and personal leadership plans can arm campers with the self-confidence and personal management tools needed to pursue their leadership goals.
Sandra Conoly, a member of the Leadership Camp Planning Committee, said, "Many of the questions asked of students applying for college scholarships pertain to the leadership roles the students have held. This camp will give students an opportunity to work with their peers in gaining first-hand experience in community involvement and can ultimately result in financial awards as they prepare to enter college."
Campers will meet 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Cost for the camp is $185 and includes a portfolio, leadership information and lunch each day, field trips and instruction. Scholarships may be available on a limited basis. For additional information on or to register, please contact the Division of Continuing Studies, 325-942-2339.
