62 Freshmen Named to Up & Coming Scholars Program

Sixty-two Tom Green County high school students have been named 2002 Up and Coming Scholars in a program that guarantees them scholarships to Angelo State University when they fulfill requirements for graduation in 2006.

The students were selected from the San Angelo Independent School District and the Grape Creek Independent School District. The Up and Coming Scholars Program was initiated in 1994 to provide needy and worthy students with the opportunity and financial support to earn a college degree at Angelo State University.

Members of the 2002 class of Up and Coming Scholars by school are:

Grape Creek Middle School: Shandi McWright.

Edison Junior High School: Aaron Amaro, Taylor Anderson, Patricia De La Cruz, Joel Guerrero Jr., Chelsea Hillis, Juan Martinez, Mizael Martinez, Nelsy Ortiz, Cyndi Michelle Pena, Ashley Perez, Thomas Rodriguez, David Segura, Angeline Singleton and Stephanie Ward.

Glenn Junior High School: Michael De Leon, Danielle Garcia, Kristin Guerrero, Katherine Hankins, Lindsay Levine, Janelle Negron and Amber Schnitzer.

Lee Junior High School: Morgan Bell, Britni Crooms, Michael Dalton, Dung Dang, Travis Doig, Anna Fuson, Bianca Mares, Nisa Nguyen, Larry O'Neal Thomas, Kristena Torres, Clayton Usrey and Charles Warren.

Lincoln Junior High School: Manuel Alcantar, Ashley Ashby, Kelly Banta Wilson, Sam Calhoun, Juan Carlos Carranco, Selly Cervantes, Victoria Chappa, Matthew Davila, Rudy De La Cruz, Patricia Galarza, Leonella Gallegos, Pam Guadarrama, Kristie Guajardo, Ashley Huereca, Janice McNew, Anna Belle Mellor, Marisa Molina, Rachel Randall, Abell Rivera, April Rodriguez, Tiffany Rusler, Kayla Sandefer, Sasha Soto, Brittany Smith, Ross Spear-Martin, Gabriela Torres, Josh Watkins and Sabrina Zuniga.

The program is funded through ASU's Robert G. and Nona K. Carr Scholarship Foundation, which covers tuition and all fees for the Up and Coming Scholars, and by Mrs. Eva Camuñez Tucker who provides funding for the Up and Coming Scholars Summer Program and for scholarships for students outside the San Angelo Independent School District. Sponsors for the program also include Shannon Health Systems, First American Bank, Automatic Fire Protection and International House of Pancakes.
