ASU Rugby Club Starts Off on Right Foot
The Angelo State University Rugby Club scored a perfect weekend with victories in three matches in a Dallas round-robin tournament over the weekend.
The club started the weekend off with a 30-0 victory over the University of Texas at Dallas. The second match involved a tough victory over the University of North Texas with ASU coming out on top, 17-10. In the final game, ASU won another close contest, 14-5, over the University of Dallas.
Rugby coach Nick Flynn said last year the club managed only a 1-1-1 record in the same tournament so he is optimistic about another winning season.
"It's still a little too early to make any broad predictions, but this does suggest that we will have another successful run at the championship," said Flynn.
Flynn said he was impressed with how well the first-year team members played.
"I think this is the most dedicated and athletic bunch of first-year players that we have had since the club started," Flynn said. "The loss of some of last year's first-year players due to graduation or other on-campus commitments opens the door for these players to start for the club. They should be excited about the opportunities in front of them."
