USAA Supports ASU Computer Science Program
Angelo State University's Computer Science Department has received a $2,000 sponsorship from USAA, the leading provider of financial services to military families, to expand the tutoring services the department provides its students.
The sponsorship recognizes the long-standing relationship between USAA and ASU's Computer Science Department. Over the past two decades numerous ASU computer science graduates have become USAA employees.
Representing USAA at the presentation was Dan Herrington, vice president, operations e-commerce, desktop and service management, USAA Information Technology. Herrington is a 1979 ASU graduate with a bachelor of science degree in computer science.
Dr. Michael Butler, dean of the College of Business and Professional Studies, and Dr. Charles McCamant, head of the Computer Science Department, accepted the check on behalf of Angelo State University.
Butler said ASU and USAA have developed a mutually beneficial relationship over the years. USAA offers computer science graduates exceptional job opportunities and ASU graduates provide the member-owned Fortune 500 company a reliable source of well-trained employees for its information technology operations.
McCamant said the sponsorship would allow ASU to extend the hours and to hire more student consultants for the computer science tutoring programs. Because the computer science courses tend to be so difficult, the tutoring opportunities ensure that ASU computer science students fully comprehend the highly technical materials necessary to succeed in the program and in the workforce once they graduate.
"quot; The tutoring program is an integral part of the success of our students and of what makes them attractive employee candidates for USAA and other compa"ies," McCam"nt said. "This further strengthens our program and our relationship with USAA, which our department considers one of its most valued employers. We look forward to maintaining a strong relationship for many"years to come."
