Summer Preview ASU Sessions Set for New Students

Students enrolling at Angelo State University for the first time this fall are encouraged to attend one of the summer sessions of Preview ASU, the university's orientation program.

Preview ASU is scheduled for June 6-7, June 27-28, July 18-19 and Aug. 1-2. A "Preview Express" program is scheduled for the afternoon of Aug. 2 for transfer students and students who cannot attend a two-day session.

Registration forms have been mailed to students accepted for ASU admission. Additional forms are available by phone at (325) 942-2191, by e-mail at PreviewASU@angelo.edu or at the Preview ASU website at http://www.angelo.edu/services/student_life/preview_asu.htm.

Space in each session is limited and is assigned on a first come-first served basis. Students are encouraged to make reservations as soon as possible so they will have the best chance of being accepted for their preferred session.

Nolen Mears, associate dean of student life, said the orientation programs acquaint students and their parents with all aspects of university life. Additionally, Preview ASU allows incoming students to receive individual academic advising and to register for their fall classes.

Participating students meet with academic advisers to discuss majors and to select courses. Student counselors are available to assist with class scheduling. By the time new students complete Preview ASU, they will have their fall semester class schedules.

"Preview ASU guides students through what to expect at ASU and assists them in registering for their first classes," Mears said. "Over the years we have found that this helps reduce anxiety not only for students but also for parents as their children begin new phases of their lives."

In addition to reviewing facilities, courses and student activities, students will be able to tour the campus and meet with representatives of student organizations, academic advisors and the counseling staff.

Advance registration is required to attend Preview ASU. The registration fee for Preview ASU is $25 per student and $10 for each parent or guest. The fees include all costs of Preview ASU materials, a dinner and refreshments. Housing accommodations are also available in a University residence hall during Preview ASU. Housing costs are $15 per person. Cost of the one-day Preview Express session is $20.

ASU fall semester activities will begin Sept. 1 with Fish Splash for incoming freshmen. ASU classes will begin Sept. 2.
