ASU Rugby Club to Host, Compete in Two Division Championships
The Angelo State Rugby Club will host the Texas Rugby Union Division II and Division III Championships Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, at the ASU Intramural Fields on Jackson Avenue.
The division championship matches will feature the best teams from Texas, including two from Angelo State University which began collegiate competition just three years ago.
Other competitors will include Sam Houston State University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas Christian University.
The winner of the Division II Championship will advance to the territorial championships in Plano on April 5-6. The championship in each division will be determined by a two-day, single elimination tournament. Matches will start on Saturday, March 1, at noon and on Sunday, March 2, at 11 a.m. on the ASU Intramural Fields.
The Angelo State University Rugby Club has the interesting distinction of being the first collegiate rugby club in the state to advance two teams to two different Texas Rugby Union championships in the same year.
ASU Rugby Coach Nick Flynn said, "We are proud of this unique accomplishment. Historically, Texas A&M and UT are the only other clubs that field two teams in two separate divisions. The fact that we were able to successfully do this and advance both of our teams to the championships says quite a bit about what we have accomplished with this rugby program at Angelo State."
