ASU's Dalrymple Wins Praise for Short Story Collection

A collection of 10 short stories by Angelo State University English Professor Terry Dalrymple has been published by Panther Creek Press under the title "Salvation and Other Stories."

The character-driven stories range from the comic to the somber as Dalrymple explores the vagaries of human relationships at various ages and in a variety of settings. From the title story "Salvation" about a gas station attendant who turns to God to help him win a woman to a story about a church congregation that sets out to save the world and grows uneasy about the people who show up to occupy the church's pews, Dalrymple captures the permutations of the human mind.

Literary critic Don Graham says the short story collection "explores two preoccupations in West Texas: religion and sex" and notes that "Dalrymple's comic touch is leavened with genuine pathos." Robert Flynn observes that Dalrymple wrings truth from a story and "with humor and insight manages to find hope of redemption" for all humanity.

An ASU faculty member since 1979, Dalrymple is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters and holder of the John S. Cargile Professorship in English at the university. He has published numerous short stories, articles and reviews in periodicals such as Modern Short Stories, Cimarron Review, American Literary Review, Short Story, The Writer and Writer's Digest. His previous stories have appeared in the anthologies New Growth 2 and Texas Short Stories. He is also the author of Fishing for Trouble, a novel for middle readers.

In 1987 with funding from Fort Concho Museum Press, he founded the literary journal Concho River Review and became its first editor. He currently serves as fiction editor for the journal.
