ASU Alumni to Hold Reception for CNN Headline News Anchor
The Angelo State University Alumni Association will host a public reception for Renay San Miguel, news anchor for CNN Headline News and a former ASU student, at 5-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Avenue.
San Miguel has more than 24 years of journalism experience as anchor and reporter for television stations in San Francisco, Austin, San Angelo and Dallas before working with national television networks. Before joining CNN, he worked for CNBC and CBS.
Currently, San Miguel is a news co-anchor with Kathleen Kennedy on CNN Headline News, based in CNN's Atlanta headquarters. During Operation Iraqi Freedom in the spring of 2003, San Miguel helped staff the CNN/U.S. military desk. Additionally, San Miguel participated in Headline News' coverage of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2002.
San Miguel has received numerous professional awards, including a Heartland Emmy Award and a University of Maryland Casey Award for his work on documentaries involving television violence and welfare reform. Last year he won a Cybersecurity Journalism Award of Merit from Carnegie Mellon University and the Newseum for columns and stories that appeared on the Headline News website and cnn.com. In 2000 the ASU Alumni Association designated San Miguel as a distinguished alumnus.
San Miguel is visiting San Angelo to speak at the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Diversity Awards Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center on the ASU campus.
