Library Friends Award Lee Scholarship to Austin Senior
Angelo State University senior Marquita Clarkson has been named the fall recipient of the Joe Bill Lee Scholarship given each semester by the Friends of the Porter Henderson Library and West Texas Collection to an outstanding student employee.
Clarkson, a 2001 graduate of A.N. McCallum High School in Austin, received the $250 scholarship during the annual meeting of the Friends.
She has worked in the library's Circulation Department for the past three years. She was recently promoted to senior student assistant. She plans to graduate in May with a bachelor of business administration and then pursue an M.B.A.
Initiated this past year, the scholarship honors Joe Bill Lee, who served as director of the University library for 30 years. The scholarship is awarded each fall and spring semester to one student assistant in the Porter Henderson Library or the West Texas Collection.
Lee was ASU's head librarian from 1963-1992. During his tenure, he oversaw the design and construction of the Porter Henderson Library. The Lee Scholarship will be awarded each fall and spring semester to a student nominated by a supervisor or other full-time library staff member for outstanding work performance with a service-oriented attitude. The recipient must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
The Friends organization strives to enhance the collections, services and programs of ASU's library facilities. Members work with the ASU staff to make the university's library and archival resources more widely known, used and appreciated.
