Chemistry Group's Activities Earn Commendation
The national American Chemical Society has recognized the Angelo State University student chapter with a Commendable designation.
The award from the ACS Committee on Education was granted based on a report written by chapter president Chris Hobbs that described the chapter's programs and activities.
One of the chapter's programs is Parent's Night Out, in which chemistry students spend an evening presenting chemistry experiments and other chemistry lessons to children. The chapter was able to put on the event thanks in part to an Innovative Activities grant from ACS.
Another program is Science Days, in which ACS teams up with faculty and other campus science organizations to present various scientific disciplines to children. Among the day's events is a chemistry magic show.
"We're trying to spread our love and appreciation of science to the younger generation to bring more people into the field," said Hobbs, a junior chemistry major.
Commendable is the second highest recognition given to an individual chapter of the 125-year-old organization. This year, there were 32 Outstanding chapters, 61 Commendable and 81 Honorable Mention.
The ASU chapter has approximately 30 members. Its faculty sponsors are Dr. Nick Flynn and Dr. Donna Howell.
