Angelo State University reports BILLED qualified tuition and related expenses in Box 2.

    • My last term was spring

Will you receive a Form 1098-T that includes the spring billing in Box 2? Maybe not. The start date of the term does not determine the tax year.

The information for your form depends on the transaction dates of registration/fee assessment (for Box 2) and aid disbursement (for Box 5). Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. Your spring billing may have been included on the prior year’s form (when it became a billed transaction due to registration/fee assessment in the fall), and Box 2 may be blank for the tax year you were in class. This is typical for most spring graduates.

Remember, Angelo State University does not report payments in Box 1. Payment information for the tax year is available in the Tax Notification or from the student’s personal receipts and is not reported by ASU to the IRS.

You should go through RamPort and look for a Tax Notification for the tax year you want. If you do not have a form for that tax year, you will see the message “No tax notification exists for tax year.”

    • What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), as amended, establishes requirements regarding the privacy of student records. FERPA governs:

      • The release of student records maintained by the university
      • Access to student records

When a student reaches the age of 18 OR is attending a postsecondary institution, regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer from the parent to the student. Parents of ASU students may not receive information from a student’s records unless the student creates a FERPA/Proxy Authorized User from his/her secure RamPort account.

    • View your Student’s tax forms online with FERPA/Proxy Access

The Tax Notification in RamPort is an online version that has many tax year details (transaction dates/terms included, billing, payments, etc.) that you may also want to print for your tax preparation records.

Students must create a FERPA/Proxy Access for you to view the Tax Notification. Without this authorization, you will not be able to see the Tax Notification. Once your student gives you FERPA/Proxy Access, you will receive an email with further instructions. Visit the FERPA/Proxy Access web page for more details.

After the student has created your access, you may use the Proxy Login to view the Tax Notification.

    • View your Student’s tax forms online without FERPA/Proxy Access

The Tax Notification in RamPort is an online version that has many tax year details (transaction dates/terms included, billing, payments, etc.) that you may also want to print for your tax preparation records.

Without FERPA/Proxy Access, parents must ask their student to provide them with the Tax Notification from RamPort. The University will not provide the Tax Notification from RamPort to parents.
