FAQs
What is a Form 1098-T?
All eligible educational institutions must file a Form 1098-T for each qualifying student for whom a reportable transaction is made during the calendar tax year.
Please note that the 1098-T may not provide all of the information you need to determine eligibility for tax credits and deductions. Eligibility for any tax benefit depends upon your individual facts and circumstances. The University cannot provide tax advice.
Will I receive a form every year?
Every ASU student may not meet the IRS requirements to receive a form for each year.
Angelo State University will calculate billed qualified charges or scholarships and grants applied to the student’s account with a transaction date during the calendar tax year. However, these amounts are subject to reporting exceptions by the IRS.
ASU is not required to file forms for:
- nonresident aliens, unless requested by the student
- courses for which no academic credit is offered
- students whose qualified tuition and related fees are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships or grants
If you are unsure if you meet a reporting exception, please follow the instructions to access your Tax Notification in RamPort to determine if you have qualified to receive a form for the current tax year.
- If you do not qualify to receive an IRS form, you will see this message in your Tax Notification: A representation of the Tuition Statement form 1098-T is shown below. This will not be sent to you or to the Internal Revenue Service as the amounts do not require reporting.
- If you do qualify to receive an IRS form, you will see this message in your Tax Notification: A representation of the Tuition Statement form 1098-T is shown below. This important tax information has been forwarded for processing.
Students who qualify will have their IRS forms mailed to the address on the Tax Notification and have their forms available online at www.1098t.com.
Why doesn’t my Form 1098-T agree with what I paid Angelo State University?
