Questions?

  • What is a Form 1098-T?

IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement is an informational return. All eligible educational institutions must file an IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for each qualifying student for whom a reportable transaction is made during the calendar year. Forms are not required for students with these reporting exceptions: non-resident alien or non-credit courses.

Please note that the Form 1098-T may not provide all of the information needed to determine eligibility for tax credits and deductions. Eligibility for any tax benefit depends upon your individual facts and circumstances. The University cannot provide tax advice.

  • What is on the Form 1098-T?

Angelo State University reports amounts BILLED (not paid) for qualified tuition and related expenses in Box 2. The amount reported is the total amount BILLED less any reductions in charges made during the calendar year that relate to the amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses during the same calendar year. The amount reported is not reduced by scholarships and grants reported in Box 5.

Angelo State University reports amounts scholarships and grants in Box 5. This is the total amount of any scholarships or grants administered and processed during the calendar year for the payment of the student’s costs of attendance. Scholarships and grants generally include all payments received from 3rd parties (excluding family members and loan proceeds). This includes payments received from governmental and private entities such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, civic, and religious organizations, and nonprofit entities.

Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. The start date of the term does not determine the tax year.

Students should note BILLED tuition and fee charges and scholarships and grants disbursed for the same term could be reported in two different tax years based on individual transaction dates.

If Box 7 on the form is checked, the amount in Box 2 includes amounts for an academic period beginning January-March, after the tax year.

  • What other information do I need?

The form 1098-T, as designed and regulated by the IRS, may not contain all of the information needed to claim an education tax benefit. Please consult a tax professional, the IRS at 800-829-1040, or the IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education.

    You may need additional information.

  • Will I receive a Form 1098-T every year?

Possibly. The information for your form depends on the transaction dates of billing and aid disbursement. This can result in your amounts changing for tax year to tax year, even though your total hours/aid each term did not change.

You should go through RamPort and look for a Tax Notification for the tax year you want. If you do not have a form for that tax year, you will see the message “No tax notification exists for tax year.”

  • Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

IRS rules may not allow education tax benefits unless the student receives a Form 1098-T. All ASU students will receive a form (even if all boxes are blank) in the mail or online by January 31. This includes high school students receiving ASU credit through Dual Credit Programs.

The Tax Notification in RamPort is an online version that has many tax year details (transaction dates/terms included, billing, payments, etc.) that you may also want to print for your tax preparation records.

Forms are not required for students with these reporting exceptions: non-resident alien or non-credit courses.

  • I received a Form 1098-T in the mail. Where is the detail for the form?

It’s on your Tax Notification in RamPort. You can see the detail, but it is not sent to the IRS.

  • Why did I receive a Form 1098-T that is blank?

IRS rules may not allow education tax benefits unless the student receives a Form 1098-T. All ASU students will receive a form (even if all boxes are blank) in the mail or online by January 31. This includes high school students receiving ASU credit through Dual Credit Programs.

The information for your form depends on the transaction dates of billing and aid disbursement. While that may leave you with a blank form for the year, your tax benefits may be limited or you may be subject to an IRS audit if the university did not issue the form.

Please consult a tax professional, the IRS at 800-829-1040, or the IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education.

  • What is on the Tax Notification?

The same information that is reported on the IRS Form 1098-T and supplemental account information such as payments, refunds, loans, and non-qualified charges students may want for their records.

  • My last term was in the spring 2017. Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

Will you receive a Form 1098-T that includes the spring 2017 billing in Box 2? Maybe not. The start date of the term does not determine the tax year.

The information for your form depends on the transaction dates of billing (for Box 2) and aid disbursement (for Box 5). Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. Your spring 2017 billing may have been included on the prior year’s form (when it was billed in the fall), and Box 2 may be blank for the tax year you were in class. This is typical for most spring 2017 graduates.

Remember, Angelo State University does not report payments in Box 1. Payment information for the tax year is available in the Tax Notification or from the student’s personal receipts and is not reported by ASU to the IRS.

You should go through RamPort and look for a Tax Notification for the tax year you want. If you do not have a form for that tax year, you will see the message “No tax notification exists for tax year.”

  • I am no longer a student. Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

Possibly. Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. The start date for the term does not determine the tax year.

You should go through RamPort and look for a Tax Notification for the tax year you want. If you do not have a form for that tax year, you will see the message “No tax notification exists for tax year.”

Former students still have access to RamPort. The Technology Service Center (1-866-942-2911) can help reset an expired password.

  • I am a parent. How can I tell if my student will receive a Form 1098-T?

The tax information is available to your student.

However, students can give a parent, as a Proxy, online viewing access to their student records. All they have to do is create a FERPA/Proxy Authorized User form their secure RamPort account and grant online viewing access by choosing the “Authorization” tab to select the Tax Notification to view. When that is complete, you may log in as a Proxy and view the Tax Notification for the tax year.

Watch the Online FERPA/Proxy videos or scroll to the bottom of the page for more instructions.

Without FERPA/Proxy Access, parents must ask their student to provide them with the Tax Notification from RamPort. The University will not provide the Tax Notification from RamPort to parents.

The IRS Form 1098-T that is mailed to students is also available online at www.1098t.com.

  • Why is Box 1 blank?

Angelo State University does not report payments in Box 1. Payment information for the tax year is available in the Tax Notification or from the student’s personal receipts and is not reported by ASU to the IRS.

  • I have an amount in the adjustment box. Why?

The amounts in the adjustment boxes occur when billed charges or disbursed aid that was reported on a prior year’s tax form have been reduced in the current tax year. This can happen if you are billed for spring classes in the fall and then drop a spring class after January 1, if you have an exemption applied for spring in January, or if you have aid reduced for a prior term. The IRS requires these reductions to be reported in the adjustment boxes in the tax year the reduction is made.

  • Why doesn’t my Form 1098-T match what I paid?

The Form 1098-T is not a receipt.

Angelo State University does not report payments in Box 1. Payment information for the tax year is available in the Tax Notification or from the student’s personal receipts and is not reported by ASU to the IRS.

  • Who will mail the Form 1098-T?

Angelo State University contracts with Conduent Educational Services, LLC to provide qualifying students a Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for the tax year. The form is mailed by January 31 after the tax year to each qualifying student at their permanent address on record with the Office of the Registrar. Conduent Educational Services, LLC also makes the form available online at www.1098T.com.

  • Are the books purchased at the university bookstore included in this form?
