  • What is a Form 1098-T?

    IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement is an informational return. All eligible educational institutions must file an IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for each qualifying student for whom a reportable transaction is made during the calendar year. Forms are not required for students with these reporting exceptions: non-resident alien, non-credit courses, Box 5 Scholarships and Grants equal or exceed Box 2 Qualified Billed Tuition and Related Expenses.

    Please note that the Form 1098-T may not provide all of the information needed to determine eligibility for tax credits and deductions. Eligibility for any tax benefit depends upon your individual facts and circumstances. The University cannot provide tax advice.

  • What is on the Form 1098-T?

    Angelo State University reports amounts BILLED (not paid) for qualified tuition and related expenses in Box 2. The amount reported is the total amount BILLED less any reductions in charges made during the calendar year that relate to the amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses during the same calendar year. The amount reported is not reduced by scholarships and grants reported in Box 5.

    Angelo State University reports amounts scholarships and grants in Box 5. This is the total amount of any scholarships or grants administered and processed during the calendar year for the payment of the student’s costs of attendance. Scholarships and grants generally include all payments received from 3rd parties (excluding family members and loan proceeds). This includes payments received from governmental and private entities such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, civic, and religious organizations, and nonprofit entities.

    Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. The start date of the term does not determine the tax year.

    Students should note BILLED tuition and fee charges and scholarships and grants disbursed for the same term could be reported in two different tax years based on individual transaction dates.

    If Box 7 on the form is checked, the amount in Box 2 includes amounts for an academic period beginning January-March, after the tax year.

  • What are qualified tuition and related expenses?

    Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition, fees, and course materials required for a student to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution.

  • What is not on the Form 1098-T?

    Payments made to Angelo State University are not on the form.

    Non-qualified tuition and related expenses are not on the form.

  • What are non-qualified tuition and related expenses?

    Non-qualified tuition and related expenses are charges and fees for room, board, insurance, medical expenses (including student health fees), transportation, and similar personal, living, or family expenses.

  • What other information do I need?

    The form 1098-T, as designed and regulated by the IRS, may not contain all of the information needed to claim an education tax benefit. Please consult a tax professional, the IRS at 800-829-1040, or the IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education.

  • Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

    Every student may not meet the IRS requirements to receive the IRS Form 1098-T.

    Angelo State University provides a Tax Notification for the tax year whether the student meets the IRS requirements to receive the IRS Form 1098-T. Every student should access the Tax Notification and read the personal message at the top to determine if the student will receive the IRS Form 1098-T for the tax year.

    Forms are not required for students with these reporting exceptions: non-resident alien, non-credit courses, Box 5 Scholarships and Grants equal or exceed Box 2 Qualified Billed Tuition and Related Expenses.

  • Will I receive a Form 1098-T every year?

    Every student may not meet the IRS requirements to receive the IRS Form 1098-T each year.

    The information for your form depends on the transaction dates of registration/fee assessment and aid disbursement. This can result in your amounts changing for tax year to tax year, even though your total hours/aid each term did not change.

    Angelo State University provides a Tax Notification for the tax year whether the student meets the IRS requirements to receive the IRS Form 1098-T. Every student should access the Tax Notification and read the personal message at the top to determine if the student will receive the IRS Form 1098-T for the tax year.

  • I received a Form 1098-T in the mail. Where is the detail for the form?

    It’s on your Tax Notification in RamPort. You can see the detail, but it is not sent to the IRS.

  • Will I receive a Tax Notification every year?

    Angelo State University provides a Tax Notification for the tax year whether the student meets the IRS requirements to receive the IRS Form 1098-T.   • What is on the Tax Notification?

    The same information that is reported on the IRS Form 1098-T and supplemental account information such as payments, refunds, loans, and non-qualified charges students may want for their records.

  • My last term was in the spring. Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

    Maybe not. Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. The start date of the term does not determine the tax year.

    Your spring billing may have been included on the prior year’s form (when it became a billed transaction due to fee assessment/registration in the fall), and you may not have a form for the next tax year. This is typical for spring graduates.

    You should access your Tax Notification in RamPort, read the personal message at the top to determine if you will receive the IRS Form 1098-T for the tax year.

    Former students still have access to RamPort. The Technology Service Center (1-866-942-2911) can help reset an expired password.

  • I am no longer a student. Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

    Possibly. Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. The start date for the term does not determine the tax year.

    You should access your Tax Notification in RamPort, read the personal message at the top to determine if you will receive the IRS Form 1098-T for the tax year.

    Former students still have access to RamPort. The Technology Service Center (1-866-942-2911) can help reset an expired password.

  • I am a parent. How can I tell if my student will receive a Form 1098-T?

    This information is available to your student. The student should access the Tax Notification and read the personal message at the top to determine if they will receive the IRS Form 1098-T for the tax year.

    However, students can give a parent, as a Proxy, online viewing access to their student records. All they have to do is create a FERPA/Proxy Authorized User form their secure RamPort account and grant online viewing access by choosing the “Authorization” tab to select the Tax Notification to view. When that is complete, you may log in as a Proxy and view the Tax Notification for the tax year.

  • Why is Box 1 blank?

    The Form 1098-T is not a receipt. Angelo State University does not report payment amounts in Box 1.

    Angelo State University will not report payment information to the IRS. Students can see payment amounts by viewing the Supplemental Information section of their Tax Notification in RamPort.

  • I have an amount in the adjustment box. Why?

    The amounts in the adjustment boxes occur when billed charges or disbursed aid that was reported on a prior year’s tax form have been reduced in the current tax year. This can happen if you register for spring classes in the fall and then drop a spring class after January 1, if you have an exemption applied for Spring in January, or if you have aid reduced for a prior term. The IRS requires these reductions to be reported in the adjustment boxes in the tax year the reduction is made.

  • Why doesn’t my Form 1098-T match what I paid?

    The Form 1098-T is not a receipt. Angelo State University does not report payment amounts in Box 1.

    Angelo State University will not report payment information to the IRS. Students can see payment amounts by viewing the Supplemental Information section of their Tax Notification in RamPort.

  • Who will mail the Form 1098-T?

    Angelo State University contracts with Xerox Educational Services, LLC to provide qualifying students a Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for the tax year. The form is mailed by January 31 after the tax year to each qualifying student at their permanent address on record with the Office of the Registrar. Xerox Educational Services, LLC also makes the form available online at www.1098T.com.

  • Are the books purchased through the university bookstore included in this form?

    No. This form does not include purchases through the university bookstore operated by Follett Higher Education Group.
