What is a Form 1098-T?
All eligible educational institutions must file an IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for each qualifying student for whom a reportable transaction is made during the calendar tax year.
Please note that the Form 1098-T may not provide all of the information you need to determine eligibility for tax credits and deductions. Eligibility for any tax benefit depends upon your individual facts and circumstances. The University cannot provide tax advice.
Will I receive a form every year?
Every ASU student may not meet the IRS requirements to receive a form for each year. Please follow the instructions to access your student Tax Notification in RamPort to determine if you have qualified to receive a form for the current tax year.
Do I qualify to receive a form?
For every student, Angelo State University will calculate the billed qualified charges and scholarships and grants applied to the student’s account with a transaction date during the calendar tax year. This information is viewable for every student in their Tax Notification in RamPort. However, these amounts are subject to reporting exceptions by the IRS, and only qualifying students for whom a reportable transaction is made during the calendar tax year will be issued and IRS Form 1098-T. ASU is not required to file forms for students who meet reporting exceptions.
Students do not qualify to have an IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement issued by ASU if they meet any of these three IRS reporting exceptions:
- nonresident aliens, unless requested by the student
- courses for which no academic credit is offered
- students whose qualified tuition and related fees are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships or grants
If you are unsure if you meet a reporting exception, please follow the instructions to access your Tax Notification in RamPort to determine if you have qualified to receive a form for the current tax year.

Why doesn’t my Form 1098-T agree with what I paid Angelo State University?
The form is not a receipt. Box 1 for payments received will be blank for all Angelo State University students. Angelo State University will not report payment information to the IRS. Students can see payment amounts by viewing the Supplemental Information section of their Tax Notification in RamPort.
Angelo State University reports in Box 2 billed qualified tuition and fee amounts that were processed through the student’s account during the tax year.
