Fraternity Recruitment Rules 2006

Formal Recruitment will begin on the Sunday after school starts and end on the following Friday. Formal Recruitment orientation will be held on Sunday. Bid activities will take place the following Friday.

Check-in and registration will be held from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Each fraternity will have the opportunity to share information about their organization to the prospective members.

Each fraternity's presentation will be no longer than 10 minutes in length. There will be no cursing, any kind of nudity, violence, alcohol, or negative recruitment. Any violation will be sent to judicial board.

Recruitment participants will be provided refreshments during recruitment orientation as long as registration is over 20 men. These refreshments are to be paid for with IFC funds.

All new members who accept bids after the last day of Formal Recruitment and who did not participate in the entire Formal Recruitment process (Friday Orientation and visited 2 of the four chapters rush events) will be assessed a $25 informal rush fee to be paid by the potential new member. All fees will go towards IFC.

The IFC President, recruitment chair, or both will attend every member fraternity party.

All potential new members must attend two events in order to complete the recruitment process and be considered for a formal bid in the Fall and Spring semester.

Full participation in formal recruitment is defined as attending the orientation session on the first day of recruitment and also attending 2 individual chapter parties.

If a potential new member is not able to fully participate in formal recruitment events he must go though the informal recruitment process and pay the $25.00 informal rush fee.

The Fraternity Check-In Form must be presented at bid acceptance in order to avoid a $25.00 informal rush fee.

A first semester freshman must have a high school equivalent GPA of 2.3 on a 4.0 scale in order to receive and accept a bid. A second semester freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior must have an ASU GPA of 2.25 in order to receive or accept a bid.

No fraternity member is to be in the vicinity of the bid room on bid day. Bids shall be handed out by the IFC advisor or someone designated by the IFC advisor, they are not to be an undergraduate student.

The recruitment period is defined as the last day of the previous semester through bid day. The informal process begins on the following Monday after bid day.

Bids given informally may not be offered until the Monday after formal recruitment.

It is the responsibility of each chapter's recruitment chair and president to make sure that his chapter's members understand that a violation of any of these recruitment rules may subject a chapter to fines and/or include judicial proceedings.

Recruitment Violations

Violations will be reviewed by the Associate Dean for Student Involvement on an individual basis and all violators will be given the chance to speak on their own behalf. If deemed necessary, the Associate Dean for Student Involvement will refer the cases to Judicial Board.

The IFC Judicial Board shall consist of one senior member of each fraternity participating in Formal Recruitment; all judicial hearings shall be governed by Article IX of the IFC constitution.

A contact sheet of registered potential new members names and phone numbers will be distributed to the chapter 2 days prior to the beginning of Dry Recruitment.

All violations shall be submitted in writing (Incident Report) to the Center for Student Involvement within 14 days of bid day.

All potential new members from the end of the spring semester to the end of Formal Recruitment must go through Formal Recruitment in order to avoid the $25 fee.

A potential new member is anyone who is not affiliated with an NIC Fraternity and is enrolled as a full time (12 hours) student at Angelo State University.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited as part of any activity that may be considered related to membership recruitment as stated by Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, The National Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and Angelo State University Interfraternity Council (IFC).

Alcohol prohibition starts with the beginning of Formal Recruitment, (recruitment orientation), and includes any recruitment activity through bid day on the following Friday.

No alcoholic functions will be held during Formal Recruitment with potential new members present.

A function is defined as any event hosted by a fraternity member, or any event in which 8 or more active members are present.

During rush week active members shall not promote recruitment at a private function where alcohol is present.

Any fraternity found in violation of said alcohol policy will be referred to judicial board.

During Formal Recruitment flyers will be created and posted by IFC.

Recruitment advertisements for rush week must prominently display the statement "This will be an ALCOHOL FREE event" on the flyer, poster, etc. A contact name and phone number/email must be displayed. In addition, all ASU Posting Regulations must be followed.

All Fraternities must have their schedule of events turned in by the Friday before rush week to be able to participate and host a rush event.

All Fraternities must have Semester dues paid before being able to participate in Rush.

Chapters wishing to conduct additional interviews may do so as long as the new member meets the two fraternity event quota to receive the wavier of the informal rush fee.

Fraternities are not allowed to host events on other fraternities' days.

Chapters are not allowed to conduct events or interviews where alcohol is present.
