Student Organizations - Honor Societies

University-wide Honor Society

Alpha Chi

Discipline: All
Purpose: To promote and recognize scholarship, those elements of character which make scholarship effective for good among the students in the academic divisions of colleges and universities in the U.S. and other countries.

Departmental Honor Societies

Alpha Kappa Delta

Discipline: Sociology
Purpose: To acknowledge and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition.

Alpha Mu Gamma

Discipline: Modern Languages
Purpose: To recognize achievement in the field of foreign-language study; to stimulate a desire for linguistic attainment; to encourage a continuing interest in the study of foreign languages, literature and civilizations; and to foster sympathetic understanding of other peoples and international friendship.

Alpha Psi Omega

Discipline: Theatre
Purpose:
 To stimulate interest in dramatic activities at ASU; to secure for the university all the advantages and mutual benefits provided by a large national honorary fraternity; and to meet the eligibility requirements of the organization.

Beta Beta Beta

Discipline: Biology
Purpose:
 To function as an honor and professional society for students of the biological sciences. Its activities shall be designed to stimulate interest, scholarly attainment and investigation in the biological sciences and to promote the dissemination of information and new interpretations among students of the life sciences.

Delta Tau Alpha

Discipline: Agriculture
Purpose:
 To provide and recognize high standards of scholarship, leadership, and character among agricultural students; to encourage and foster high ethical standards in agriculture and professional positions; to bring together a group of outstanding students who by scholastic accomplishment, service and upholding high standards have been recognized for these traits and are capable of recognizing these traits in others; and to promote the profession of agriculture.

Kappa Delta Pi

Discipline: Teacher Education; Curriculum and Instruction
Purpose:
 To promote a closer bond among students of education; to encourage them to enter into more intimate fellowship with those dedicated to the cause of teaching as a profession for which specialized preparation is deemed imperative; to foster high standards of preparation for teaching; and to invite into bonds of fellowship those who have attained excellence of scholarship and distinction of achievement as students and servants of education.

Kappa Pi

Discipline: Art
Purpose:
 To assist and encourage members to uphold the highest ideals of their liberal education; to raise the standards of productive, artistic work among the students in our community; and to further the interest of art among the members and the community.

Lambda Pi Eta

Discipline: Communication
Purpose: Advances communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific and aesthetic inquiry.

Phi Alpha Theta

Discipline: History
Purpose: To promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.

Pi Mu Epsilon

Discipline: Math
Purpose:
 The promotion of scholarly activity in mathematics among students in academic institutions, and among the staffs of qualified non-academic institutions by: electing members on an honorary basis according to proficiency in mathematics; engaging in activities designed to promote the mathematical and scholarly development of its members; and taking any other measures which will further the purpose stated above.

Pi Sigma Alpha

Discipline: Political Science
Purpose: To promote excellence in the study of political science through a variety of programs, some of direct benefit to student members and local chapters and others targeted more generally at the profession of political science.

Psi Chi

Discipline: Psychology
Purpose:
 To encourage, stimulate and maintain excellence in scholarship, and advance the science of psychology; to provide academic recognition to its inductees; to nourish and stimulate professional growth through programs designed to augment and enhance the regular curriculum; and to provide practical experience and fellowship through affiliation with the chapter.

Sigma Delta Pi

Discipline: Spanish
Purpose: Devoted exclusively to students of Spanish in four-year colleges and universities.

Sigma Pi Sigma

Discipline: Physics
Purpose: To honor outstanding scholarship in physics; to encourage interest in physics among students at all levels; to promote an attitude of service of its members towards their fellow students, colleagues and the public; and to provide a fellowship of persons who have excelled in physics.

Sigma Tau Delta

Discipline: English
Purpose:
 To encourage creative and critical writing; to promote community interest; to provide cultural stimulation; and to recognize high achievement in undergraduate, graduate and professional studies in English-language literature.
