Hardware / Software Requirements

The Blackboard system doesn't have specific hardware requirements - basically if you can run a fairly recent web browser, your computer will probably work. However, your experience will be better if your computer meets some minimum specifications.

PC Systems:

Recommended Browsers:

Blackboard officially requires Microsoft Internet Explorer (5.2 on Mac, 5.5 or later on PC), Netscape (7.1 or later), or Apple Safari (1.1 or later, Mac only). Recent versions of Firefox and Mozilla will also work. See the Blackboard End User Configuration Guide.

Media Viewers

Blackboard supports a number of media formats. You may need one or more of the following viewers to access certain content in Blackboard.

MS Office logo

Microsoft Office offers free viewers for users to view documents created by this product suite (i.e. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint). Below are the most widely used viewers:

Quicktime logo

QuickTime is a multimedia technology developed by Apple Computer, capable of handling various formats of digital video, sound, text, animation, music, and immersive panoramic (and sphere panoramic) images. Versions are available for both Mac and PC



Real media logo

Real Player allows you to view streaming media delivered using a RealNetworks server. Versions are available for Mac and PC
