In the event of an active shooter on campus, the following should be considered:

Public Response to Campus Shooting Situations

Campus shooting incidents are unpredictable. Your immediate response will depend upon the specific situation you face. The following steps are general recommendations to consider if you are in a campus shooting incident.

Only if it is safe to do so:

1. Exit the building immediately when you become aware of the incident and move away from the immediate path of danger. Try to accomplish the following:
   • Notify anyone you may encounter to exit the building immediately.
   • Call University Police at 942-2071 or 9-911 and provide the following information to the dispatcher:
     1. The exact location of the incident
     2. Number and description of shooters involved
     3. Number of persons involved (victims/hostages)
     4. Injuries to anyone, if known
     5. Your exact location
     6. Your name and call-back phone number
2. If you are directly involved in the incident and exiting the building is not possible, consider taking the following action:
   1. Go to the nearest room or office.
   2. Close and lock the door(s) or window(s) and close blinds.
   3. Turn off the lights, radios, computer monitors and cell phones.
   4. Seek protective cover, stay out of sight.
   5. Keep quiet and act as if no one is in the room.
   6. Do not answer the door.
   7. If it is safe to do so, call 9-911 and provide the aforementioned information.
   8. Place signs in exterior windows to identify the location of injured persons.
   9. Wait for police personnel to assist you in exiting the building.
3. If you are not immediately impacted by the incident, you should take the following action:
   1. Stay away from the building.
   2. Notify anyone around you to stay away from the building.
   3. Obey all verbal directions or commands given to you by police personnel.
   4. Take protective cover and stay away from all doors and windows.
