First-Year Experience

WelcomeCongratulations! You are about to embark on one of the most exhilarating experiences of your life…college!

We welcome you to Angelo State University and look forward to helping you on your educational journey. All new students will have some sort of first-year experience—an adventure filled with challenges, opportunities and decisions. Your first year at ASU is the most critical, because it sets the stage for the rest of your college career.

We want your first year to be an exciting time for you to find an area of study that motivates you to learn. We also hope this experience allows you to meet new people and be exposed to new viewpoints to help you discover who you are and what is important to you.

ASU offers a wide range of academic support and campus resources that model the importance of both independence and interdependence. When you transition from home to campus, from high school to university, you begin the process of self-actualization while developing your individual potential. We want you to learn to think critically, find your voice, and form your own ideas while developing a sense of independence. We also want you to learn to connect to others and be a part of community, fostering your interdependence.

The First-Year Experience (FYE) Program is designed to help you find the tools and resources you need to be successful. The major component of the FYE program is the USTD 1201 Critical Thinking course, which helps you develop skills to take control of your education and maximize your university experience. Everyone’s first-year experience is different, but we hope you are excited to start this endeavor toward your final destination—ASU graduation.
