For this Challenge, teams will compete to have the highest overall average of 30-minute workouts each week. One 30 minute workout equals 1 point. Directions

  1. Form a team of at least 5 students, staff, faculty, ASU community, or a mix and elect a Team Captain.
  2. Fill out the team registration form and have each member of your team submit a release form by Wednesday, October 6, 2010 to katherine.garrison@angelo.edu.
  3. Beginning October 10, team members will exercise using the guidelines in the “Calculating Exercise” and “Qualifying Activities” sections below. Team members will then send their weekly total of 30 minute exercises (either 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 points) to their Team Captains every Monday.
  4. Team captains will average the number of 30 minute workouts for their team using our spreadsheet and send that number to katherine.garrison@angelo.edu every Monday.
  5. At the end of the 6 weeks, medals and trophies will be awarded according to the number of total points (see the “Awards” section below).

FOR EXAMPLE, Team “Coolness” exercised the following during week one:

  • Bob did 30 minutes of weight lifting on Sunday, 30 minutes of jogging on Tuesday. This counts as two 30 minute workouts total for his first week.
  • Chris did 60 minutes of walking on Tuesday, 15 minutes of walking on Wednesday and Thursday, and 30 minutes of swimming on Friday. This counts as three 30 minute workouts (the 15 minute workouts are not recorded, and the 60 minute workout counts as two 30 minute workouts).
  • Tina did 30 minutes of Speed Disk Golf on Wednesday, 45 minutes of biking on Saturday. This counts as two 30 minute workouts (the 15 extra minutes on Saturday were not recorded).
  • George did 60 minutes of jogging on Monday, 30 minutes of jogging on Wednesday, and 45 minutes of jogging on Friday. This counts as four 30 minute workouts.
  • Samantha did 60 minutes of biking on Sunday, 30 minutes of WiiFit on Tuesday, 30 Minutes of aerobics class on Wednesday, and 30 minutes of jogging on Thursday. This counts as five 30 minute workouts.

So their average for week one will be 3.2 points, which is their average number of 30 minute workouts.

Calculating Exercise

At the most, only five 30 minute workouts per person, per week can be submitted for this challenge for a total of 5 points. We encourage you to do more than the maximum 5 workouts per week, but 5 is the limit that we will record. You can do more than a 30 minute workout at one time on one day, but your minutes will only be recorded in increments of 30. So if you workout for 65 minutes one day, you can only record 60 minutes or two 30 minute workouts. Your 30 minutes of exercise must be consecutive minutes.

How do you know if you're doing light, moderate, or vigorous intensity aerobic activities? For most people, light daily activities such as shopping, cooking, or doing the laundry don't count toward the guidelines. Why? Your body isn't working hard enough to get your heart rate up (CDC). For this reason, walking while at work or while going to class does not qualify as exercise for this challenge unless your exercise falls within these two categories and lasts for 30 consecutive minutes.

Moderate-intensity aerobic activity means you're working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell is that you'll be able to talk, but not sing the words to your favorite song. Here are some examples of activities that require moderate effort:

  • Walking fast
  • Doing water aerobics
  • Riding a bike on level ground or with few hills
  • Playing doubles tennis
  • Pushing a lawn mower

Vigorous-intensity aerobic activity means you're breathing hard and fast, and your heart rate has gone up. If you're working at this level, you won't be able to say more than a few words without pausing for a breath. Here are some examples of activities that require vigorous effort:

  • Jogging or running
  • Swimming laps
  • Riding a bike fast or on hills
  • Playing singles tennis
  • Playing basketball

Workout Bonus Points

  • If you, as an individual, participate in the Turkey trot, you can count your participation as two 30 minute workouts (or 2 points).
  • If you, as an individual, coordinate a group exercise, you can add an additional point to your individual weekly total.
  • If you, as an individual, attend a community exercise event (like a walk, run, or bike race), you can add an additional point to your individual weekly total.
  • If you, as an individual, submit an article for the ASUFit Newsletter (katherine.garrison@angelo.edu), you can count that activity as one 30 minute workout for the week. Limit one article per week per person.

ASUFit Weekly Walks

ASUFit will coordinate a weekly walk and encourage all participants to attend. Weekly walks will be an easy way to get one of your 30 minute workouts accomplished (no bonus points will be awarded). These will take place in front of the UC (Mall side) at 12:10 pm every Monday during the Fitness Challenge and they will last 30 minutes. Just look for people in the blue ASUFit T-Shirts!

Awards

Teams with an average weekly total between 3 and 3.9 points will receive bronze medal awards. Teams with an average weekly total between, 4 and 4.9 points will receive silver medal awards. Teams with an average weekly total of 5 (a perfect score) will receive gold medal awards. The team(s) with the highest overall points and who also had all of their members participate in at least two bonus point activities will win an ASUFit to Trot Team Trophy.
