Well Women Guidelines

As of May 2012, the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology issued new guidelines for Pap tests, decreasing the number of Pap tests a woman should have to experience in her lifetime. Even though Pap tests are no longer scheduled yearly, all women should still have pelvic exams, breast exams and STI screenings performed annually.

The Importance
of the Pap Test

These two screening tests can help prevent cervical cancer through early detection:

  • The Pap test screens for abnormal cervical cells. Abnormal cells found can then be further evaluated and removed, as needed.
  • The HPV (Human Papillomavirus) test is performed to identify the HPV virus that can cause cell changes. Women who have an abnormal Pap test should also get the HPV test.
