    Description: Collection of more than 1200 streaming video clips and full programs. The database includes 37 of Shakespeare’s plays produced by BBC as well as additional films in history, social sciences, literature, fine arts, and the sciences.

    Every video includes synchronized captions. Closed Captions are searchable. Watch videos on any computer and on any Internet-connected mobile device. No downloads are required. Videos can be watched by multiple users at the same time.

  • Book Review Digest Plus 

    Description: Indexes and provides access to some 1,300,000 book review excerpts and over 100,000 full text book reviews from over 8,000 periodicals in the humanities, sciences, social sciences and library review media.

    Every book appears with all of its reviews together. A single book can have as little as one review citation and as much as a descriptive summary and many reviews with excerpts and full text, depending upon the coverage the book received in the reviewing literature.

    Coverage dates back to 1983. Titles reviewed include fiction and non-fiction, children’s books as well as books for adults and young adults.

    Description: This database includes bibliographic citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, as well as European dissertations back from the 17th century, to those accepted as recently as last semester. PQDT is the official dissertations repository for the Library of Congress and the publishing partner of the National Library of Canada.

    PQDT allows students, faculty, and other researchers to search for high-quality, peer-reviewed and multidisciplinary research materials related to their scholarly interests.     Description: Searchable online collection of non-current issues (‘backfile’) of selected core scholarly (peer-reviewed) journals in a broad range of disciplines.

    The time lag between the most current issues of a journal title and the content available in JSTOR is called “moving wall.” It varies from publisher to publisher. The majority of journals in JSTOR have moving walls of between 3 and 5 years, but publishers may elect walls anywhere from zero to 10 years.

    Description: Delivers unique coverage of the development of Southern California and the American West. Follow reporter Charles Lummis as he walks from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, recording his travels and providing a unique glimpse into Native American life. Read the Annual Trade Number Edition (published 1886-1962), which promoted Southern California to prospective immigrants from the East and Midwest. Review the “Noticias en Espanol” news summary column (published 1922-1933), which served the Times’ Spanish-speaking audience.

    Description: This database indexes over 30,000 plays written from Antiquity to the present, and published in English or translated into English from 1949 to the present, including mysteries, pageants, plays in verse, puppet performances, radio and television plays, and classic drama.

    Search for plays by title; author; subject (sisters, culture conflict, marriage); style (symbolism, experimental theater); genre (comedy, melodrama, musical); cast type.

  • The Washington Post
    Historical Newspaper (1877-1999)
     

    Description: Known for its comprehensive political reporting, first-rate photo essays, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writing, and unmatched investigative reporting, the Post was the first newspaper in Washington to publish seven days a week.

    Early contributors included Joseph Pulitzer and a relatively unknown, un-bylined Theodore Roosevelt, who contributed stories about the West. Beginning in the 1940s, the newspaper featured editorial cartoonist Herbert L. Block (“Herblock”), who used his drawings to express indignation with political leaders and to “raise hell.” He coined the term “McCarthyism” in the 1950s and was unrelenting in his graphic characterization of Richard Nixon.

    This newspaper is perhaps most famous for a series of stories that began with a break-in at the Watergate office complex in 1972. When it was all over, reporters Woodward and Bernstein were household names, and President Nixon had resigned in disgrace.

    Description: “Woven” by Alan Liu, Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, VoS is one of the earliest humanities research portals. It began in 1994 as a 70+ Web-page directory of humanities research resources organized by field, historical period, author, etc. It was reimplemented in 2001 as a database-to-Web system allowing for dynamic views of the data and user contributions.

    Its mission has been to provide a structured and briefly annotated guide to online resources that at once respects the established humanities disciplines in their professional organization and points toward the transformation of those disciplines as they interact with the sciences and social sciences and with new digital media.

    VoS emphasizes both primary and secondary (or theoretical) resources, and defines its audience as people who have something to learn from a higher-education, professional approach to the humanities.
