(includes El Niño/La Niña)
Acid Rain
(On-line data and reports on acid rain, atmospheric deposition and precipitation chemistry)
Produced by the USGS, National Atmospheric Deposition Program/National Trends Network (NADP/NTN).
Retrieve data from NADP/NTN using base maps by state or watershed. View and download U.S. maps of atmospheric
deposition, in either GIF or PDF format. PDF files require Adobe Acrobat Reader and are higher resolution than the
GIF files.
Flood maps and Flood insurance studies
(FEMA)
Available online from FEMA's Map Service Center (MSC) via "The FEMA Flood Map Store."
(Click the icon in the left navigation bar. Retrieve items by searching by state, county, or community name, or by
navigating a map.) The MSC is one of a suite of online services planned to expedite the dissemination of FEMA's
flood map and insurance products. MSC products include: Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps, Flood Insurance
Rate Maps, Flood Insurance Study reports, Digital Q3 flood data, Community Status Book, Flood Map Status Information
Service, Letters of Map Change, and NFIP Insurance Manuals.
Get/View Online Climate Data and Weather Observations (National Climatic Data Center)
Get data and maps on climatology & extreme events and surface, upper air, and marine data.
Global Climate Change
Produced by the National Climatic Data Center, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The section "Data, Images, and Climatology" includes data tables and images for various weather-related
events such as heavy rain, tornadoes, hurricanes, and snowstorms; satellite images; radar composite images; and
local storm reports.
Hurricane and Tropical Storm Tracking for the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans
The StormTrack system receives weather data from the US National Weather Service via satellite.
The system creates an entry for each tropical depression, storm, or hurricane when the National Weather Service
begins issuing advisories.
National Weather Service - Interactive Weather Information Network
This system is located at the National Weather Service Headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.
It obtains raw data from a telecommunications gateway, satellites, and other multilayered redundant links.
The "Graphics" button includes links to GOES imagery (infra-red, water vapor, etc.), Nexrad radar
images, Hydrometeorological Prediction Center forecast graphics, HPC Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts, and
Storm Prediction Center graphics.
The NOAA Weather Page (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
Includes links to a number of other weather-related services around the world which use weather
information derived from NOAA products.
OSEI (Operational Significant Event Imagery) (NOAA Satellite and Information Services)
"The Operational Significant Event Imagery team produces high-resolution, detailed imagery
of significant environmental events which are visible in remotely-sensed data available at the NOAA Science Center
in Suitland, Maryland." OSEI products include multichannel color composite imagery and animations. Images are
organized by topic: Current events, Dust storms, Fires, Floods, Icebergs, Ocean, Severe weather, Snow cover, Storms,
Tropical cyclones, Unique imagery, and Volcanoes. Archive files are included.
Project Impact -- Hazard Information and Awareness (Online Hazard Maps)
Produced by ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.) and FEMA. Create custom
hazard maps. Enter a location and select from several hazard types (flood hazard areas; historic tornadoes,
hail storms, windstorms and hurricanes; and recent and historic earthquakes) to help determine disaster risks
in the community.
WorldClimate (Historical weather data only)
Search by city name. Gathers in one place a worldwide range of climate data in an easy-to-use
form. Climate data are historical weather averages, showing what the weather was typically like each month, averaged
over a range of years. "This site has been essentially unchanged since it was first written in 1996. A totally
rewritten new version, with much more data and improved searching options (by current country/state etc.) is under
development. It also has corrected placenames and countries. This will be online soon."
El Niño Loss Reduction Center
Produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Includes a colored illustration of the
El Niño effect ("El Niño Global Climate Pattern - Temperature Scale in Degrees Centigrade").
NOAA El Niño Page
Includes What is an El Niño?;
a comprehensive listing of NOAA El Niño sites with Forecasts, Observations, and Research; "More About
El Niño"; and "La Niña."
NOAA La Niña Page
Includes What is La Nina?,
"General information," "Forecasts," "Impact," and "La Niña Summit."
USGS News and Information on El Niño
Includes information on floods, landslides, coastal hazards, and climate.
