English 1302 Library Instruction Online Tutorial

Commonly Used Databases

This tutorial has already highlighted Academic Search Complete as a general database frequently used by students. Here are three more:

WorldCat: This database acts as a mega library catalog that contains the holdings of thousands of libraries all over the world, including Angelo State University (but sadly, not Tom Green Public Library). Therefore, if you want to see anything existing throughout world on a topic (the whole enchilada, that is, not articles), you can search this database. Needless to say, most of the world's resources will not be located in the ASU library. If you want to use interlibrary loan to secure a source, you must do so 10 to 14 days before the date you want the item.

Lexis-Nexis Academic: Lexis-Nexis Academic contains not only information on specific subjects such as law, business and medicine, but also full text newspaper articles from across the country. All of these resources make this database extremely useful.

Issues and Controversies: Frequently used by freshmen for researching a contemporary "hot" topic, this database contains individual articles on a variety of controversial issues. Because this database is the only one discussed in this tutorial that cannot be Boolean searched, the Library recommends the following process for finding a topic. Try doing so.

1. See the initial screen to Issues and Controversies below.  (If you are greeted by a login screen instead of the database's home page, follow this link to find a remedy.) If you are taking this tutorial from off campus, please see the Using this Tutorial page.
2. Find the Quick Access heading in the box on the right margin.
3. Click on the Access All Topics link.
4. Scroll down to find a hot topic.
