What is Multiculturalism?
The meaning of multiculturalism continues to evolve, therefore it is difficult to find a universal definition. Some define it in terms of race, while others seek to include race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ability/disability, and so on. In the Multicultural Center, we prefer the latter definition as we seek to bring about inclusion of all groups. Based on our definition, we hope to not only co-exist on campus, but to facilitate meaningful dialogue that fosters tolerance, inclusion, appreciation and social justice for historically oppressed individuals.
The primary purpose of Multicultural Activities is to increase student learning and engagement by providing diverse programs, events and services to Angelo State students, faculty and staff. The term multicultural extends far beyond race; therefore the primary goals are to educate, encourage meaningful dialogue and serve as a clearinghouse for resources such as books, interactive activities and videos. We endeavor to implement meaningful programs that will benefit individuals representing all cultures and backgrounds.
