Scrapbook University
Ami Mizell-Flint and Jody WatersAfter owning and operating this business for about three years, Ami and Jody had dreams of expanding the business. Scrapbooking has become a very popular hobby and the partners decided by adding new technology it would enhance the capabilities of their customers. It would also lead to an increase in sales. Ami and Jody did their research and found a photo copying machine specifically for use in the scrapbooking industry. This machine would cost the business $9,000.
The business had been successful, but did not have that kind of money to invest at the time. Ami and Jody decided to enter the Business Plan Competition sponsored by the Concho Valley Entrepreneurial Development Center. Ami began work on a business plan, but met with Advisor Paul Howard of the Angelo State University · Small Business Development Center to assist in the process.
Advisor Howard and Ami met several times to develop a detailed and concise business plan to enter in the competition. After many revisions and changes, they felt it was ready. Ami and Jody presented their plan to the judges and were awarded second place. They earned a $10,000 award for their efforts. Ami said, “By completing the business plan I learned more about the business we already own.” She also added, “Paul Howard was instrumental to the success of our business plan being completed. His guidance helped immensely.”
With the proceeds, the new machine is on the way and Ami and Jody are also developing a web site for their customers who have relocated around the country. This will lead to a more stable business and additional jobs for the San Angelo area.
