Mission, Vision, Value Statements, and Master Goals

MISSION (our purpose [why we exist], our values [principles and beliefs that guide us], our way of doing business [what we do to address our purpose]) as approved by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents (March 6, 2009) and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (April 30, 2009):

Angelo State University, a member of the Texas Tech University System, delivers undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and professional disciplines. In a learning-centered environment distinguished by its integration of teaching, research, creative endeavor, service, and co-curricular experiences, ASU prepares students to be responsible citizens and to have productive careers.

Review an analysis of the components of ASU's mission statement & its connection to the strategic planning process.

VISION (our “stretch statement”—what we want to be and to do in the future)

The Ad Hoc Committee on Mission, Vision, and Value Statements recommends that a vision statement not be announced until after Academic Affairs completes its updated academic plan. Reasoning that the vision must be primarily academic in nature, connecting the vision to the dialogue between and among faculty about future growth and emphases in the academic programs is identified as the best way to create a vision that fully engages faculty. With a proposed completion date of June 2009 for the academic master plan, a vision will be forthcoming at the same time.

  3. Recruit, retain and graduate, in numbers consistent with increased goals for enrollment and retention, an academically qualified student body reflecting the diversity of the region, the state, and the nation.
  4. Develop and expand both undergraduate and graduate curricula and co-curricula to support students’ intellectual and personal growth, to address issues relevant to society, and to meet the demands of State of Texas initiatives and the marketplace.
  5. Maintain a supportive, helpful environment for students, faculty, staff, community, and alumni.
  6. Develop and enhance external partnerships, collaborations, and funding opportunities.
  7. Regularly assess and evaluate all institutional functions and programs to assure continuous improvement and to maximize efficiencies .
