Dine-A-Dozen
ASU recognizes the importance of helping students develop strong ties to the local community. These ties not only enhance the collegiate experience, but also encourage students to see San Angelo as their home while they attend ASU. As part of this overall effort, each fall we sponsor the Dine-A-Dozen program that unites community leaders with new ASU students for an evening of fun, food and fellowship.
Families and/or community groups agree to host a dinner for 10 new students from outside of San Angelo who are accompanied by an ASU faculty/staff member and a returning ASU student leader. The dinners are held at the hosts’ homes or other venues, such as the host’s place of business or one of the local country clubs. Often, students and their host families will enjoy their friendships so much that they continue to foster their Dine-A-Dozen connections throughout the year.
The Student Life Office is sincerely thankful to its past hosts, student leaders and faculty/staff drivers for helping us “serve up” the very best in ASU hospitality. During the past year, more than 100 new students participated, along with a growing list of student leaders and faculty/staff drivers. A special addition to our program was a mini-tour (on the way to the dinners) that included points of interest in our city and at ASU. Students were taken by the Civic League Park to see the International Water Lily Collection, where the massive (up to 8 feet in diameter) Victoria lily pads from the Amazon River were in full bloom – a real treat! The mini-tours also included a quick drive by the fantastic ASU Lake House, where the new kayaks were on display.
