Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I am the "Greek Type?"
There is no such thing as a "Greek Type." Most of the stereotypes about Greek membership are myths. Members of Angelo State University's Greek Community are very diverse in their interests, backgrounds, ethnicities and personalities. What they all have in common is a devotion to their organization and the principles upon which they were founded.
What is Recruitment?
Recruitment (formerly known as Rush) is the period in which men and women are able to acquaint themselves with Angelo State University's Greek system. Through planned recruitment events you will learn about many aspects of Greek Life including community service, brotherhood/sisterhood, leadership and academics. This is the time to ask specific questions about Greek membership and to see what Greek Life can offer you!
How much time does a Greek Organization take? What if I work?
Each chapter varies in time commitment. The first semester of your membership, known as "pledging", may require a greater time commitment as you learn the history and founding principles of your chosen chapter. Throughout the year you will have philanthropic, social and recreational functions, chapter meetings and other activities such as study halls. Some organizations require more time than others. Many Greek students at Angelo State University balance academics, full or part-time jobs, relationships and chapter commitments. Be sure to ask questions regarding time commitments during recruitment.
Isn't there a lot of alcohol and substance abuse associated with fraternities and sororities?
Alcohol and substance abuse is not tolerated. Most organizations have mandatory educational sessions on the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse and precautions are taken at all events to ensure a safe environment. Whether or not to consume alcohol is a decision made by any Angelo State University student. Being in a fraternity or sorority has no bearing on that decision. True, the social aspect of Greek Life is one of the major reasons that students get involved in fraternities and sororities. However there's more to being in a fraternity/sorority than "partying". Fraternities and sororities have some of the most active students on campus. Every organization devotes countless hours to community service and raises money for their national philanthropies as well as encourages involvement in a wide variety of campus organizations. They also have frequent organized brotherhood/sisterhood events for their members.
Don't Greek organizations haze?
Physical and mental hazing is banned by the university, the national Greek organizations, and by the laws of the State of Texas. Fortunately, most Greeks recognize that hazing has no place in their organizations. Hazing will not be tolerated at Angelo State University.
What effect will being in a Greek Organization have on my grades?
Fraternities and sororities offer study halls, grade point requirements, and other programs to help meet the academic needs of their members. Each chapter receives an end of the semester grade report on each member. These reports help the chapter chart their members' academic progress and target members who may need additional academic support. Most organizations will also work around your academic schedule, especially during mid-terms and finals.
Does Angelo State University have fraternity/sorority houses?
Angelo State University does not have your typical fraternity house system. Most of our fraternities have off-campus lodge houses, which serve as a common meeting place for chapter meetings and functions. Sororities do not have off-campus housing. They currently meet on campus for most of their chapter functions.
Isn't being in a Greek organization expensive?
There are costs associated with membership in a Greek organization but these costs are reasonable considering the benefits. The fees will typically be higher during the semester you join but these fees are often one-time initiation fees that cover costs associated with the membership badge, national application fees and other related costs. Membership dues often cover social activities, educational programs, and leadership conferences. Membership costs vary from chapter to chapter. Payment plans may be offered through the chapter. Be sure to ask each chapter about the required fees during recruitment.
If I am new to Angelo State University, wouldn't it be better to "get my feet on the ground" before I go through recruitment?
Adjusting to college life is often a confusing process. By going through recruitment you will have the opportunity to discover a different aspect of college life, in addition to making new friends. Many students who have gone through recruitment have made strong connections and friendships with people that have lasted past the recruitment process.
If I go through recruitment, do I have to join a chapter?
You are not obligated to join any of the chapters. This is an opportunity for you to check out Greek Life at Angelo State University. You will also have the opportunity to meet other students with similar interests. Greek Life may not be for everyone, but we encourage you to take a look.
How do I get a bid? Do I have to join a fraternity or sorority?
Bids are extended at the end of the recruitment period to those who have expressed an interest in a group and who meet that group's criteria. Extending and receiving a bid is a mutual process. There is no obligation to accept a bid.
