Non-Traditional Students Survival Tips

Managing Stress

Stress can be combated, especially during midterms and finals, with preparation and sleep. Proper eating and exercise mixed with some fun and relaxation can help with day-to-day stress. Taking advantage of computer and learning labs, extended library hours and online Blackboard class resources can give busy non-traditional students a campus connection to promote academic success. Sickness can be draining, so do not forget that you are entitled to the services of the University Health Clinic. And, if you just need to talk to someone, our counseling staff is exceptional.

Managing Time

Prioritizing tasks and learning to say “no” is paramount. Other tactics are making to-do lists, avoiding procrastination by breaking a big task into smaller ones, trying to do things right the first time, setting aside time for yourself to live and dream, celebrating your successes, padding your schedule to accommodate interruptions, working when you are most alert, and using time between classes or pockets of time in life to study, clarify goals or just breathe. Also, keep an eye out for time management workshops provided by your academic department, the Counseling Center or Career Development.

Forming a Support System

Other people can help you get through just about anything. Take a moment to speak with other students, particularly other non-traditional students. Networking with other students can open all sorts of avenues you may never expect. Consider joining the Non-Traditional Student Association or other campus organizations. Staying connected with other students can enrich your educational experience.

Making Time for Family

While it may sound trite, nothing is more important than family. Involve yours in your student life when you are able. Take them to university events, introduce them to your fellow students and ask them to help you study. The ASU library has a magnificent children’s book section. Pick up something for the kids to read while you are doing research. Keep your family informed about your schedule. Often, families want to support you, but they just are not sure how. They depend on you to let them know the best way to do that. Do not underestimate the power of simple inclusion. When scheduling time for school and work, do not forget to plan special family time to recharge yourself and your family.
