If you meet the TSI Assessment scores listed above, you are eligible for college-level courses.

Students Who Do Not Meet Passing Standards

Students must enroll in a developmental course for the subject in which they did not meet state standards. You must enroll in developmental coursework until a grade of ā€œCā€ or higher is achieved. As a condition of enrollment, you must be registered for the assigned developmental courses until they have been completed.

  • If you have not met the math TSI standards, you need to enroll in a developmental math program.
  • If you have not met the reading and/or writing TSI standards, you need to enroll in a developmental English program. Additionally, students who have not passed the reading TSI Assessment will not be allowed to enroll in any English, history or political science courses. 

TSI Exemptions

Students may be exempt from meeting TSI standards if they have met one of the criteria listed below.

  • ACT

    Composite score of 23 or higher with at least a 19 on the English test and/or math sections

  • SAT

    Combined verbal and math score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 on the verbal test and/or math test

  • TAKS

    Minimum score of 2200 on both the English and/or math sections with at least a 3 on the writing component of the 11th grade TAKS (applicable for a period of five years from the date of testing)

    Note: Students must supply the TAKS essay score to the ASU Admissions Office as this score is not included on all high school transcripts.

  • STAAR

    STAAR end of course (EOC) with a minimum score of Level 2 on the English III shall be exempt from the TSI Assessment required for both reading and writing, and a minimum score of Level 2 on the Algebra II EOC shall be exempt from the TSI Assessment required for the mathematics section.

  • Transfer

    Transferred from a private or independent institution or an accredited out-of-state institution and has satisfactorily completed college-level coursework as determined by ASU 

  • Military

    Reserve: A student who is currently serving and, for at least the three-year period preceding enrollment, has served as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States.

    Veteran: A student who on or after Aug. 1, 1990, was honorably discharged, retired or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States or the Texas National Guard, or was released from service as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States.

  • Degree

    A student who has graduated with an associate or baccalaureate degree from an institution of higher education.
