Where Are They Now?

International alumni of the ASU Host Family Program are scattered around the globe. These are just some of the students who stay in touch with Barbara Barnhart, who coordinates the Host Family Program.

Name: Rohini Alam
Degree: B.B.A. in accounting, 2004
Origin: Bangladesh
Status: Alam is a marketing controller in the fragrance houses at L’Oreal in London. Recently engaged, he will be married in August in Bangladesh.
Comment: “Our life at ASU truly wouldn’t have been as wonderful as it was had it not been for…the host families.”


Name: Gian-Pietro Aniello
Degree: B.B.A. in management/marketing, 2002
Origin: France
Status: Aniello is an export executive in the textile industry, managing sales in France, Spain and the United Kingdom. He lives in Lille, France, with wife Marie and one-year-old daughter Dora.
Comment: “Four and a half years have passed and it seems like I left San Angelo yesterday. I have so many memories, awesome memories…of the 18 months I spent in Texas.”


Name: Benoit Cartier-Bresson
Origin: France
Status: Bresson finished his bachelor’s degree in Paris in 2006 and works at BNP Paribas, a french bank in New York.


Name: Christiana “Kiki” Daneva
Degree: B.B.A. in international business, 2005
Origin: Bulgaria
Status: Since graduation, Daneva received a master’s degree from the Central European University in Budapest and has worked as a human rights activist and journalist. She has recently started her own company in Bulgaria and continues to express herself through art installations and photography.


Name: Thierry Delesalle
Degree: B.B.A. in management/marketing, 2002
Origin: France
Status: Delesalle is employed at Norauto with responsibilities for the tire activity of 210 shops. He and his wife Judith, also an ASU German exchange student, live in Lille, France.


Name: Brian Francis
Degree: B.B.A. in management, 1985; M.B.A. in business, 1986
Origin: India
Status: After much global migration pursuing different career opportunities, Francis has settled in Wood Dale, Ill., with his wife Xiaohui and daughter Rachel. He owns and operates a business that imports emergency-related equipment from China.
Comment: “As a foreign student so far away from home, it was a blessing to know that we did not have to look too far to find ‘family.’”


Name: Sayantani “Sontee” Ghosh-Dastidar
Degree: B.S. in biology, 2004
Origin: India
Status: Ghosh-Dastidar is currently completing her Ph.D. in molecular genetics.
Comment: “Every step I take I am reminded of ASU. I am still in touch with my professors and a few other staff of ASU. You guys all made my stay memorable.”


Name: Maryana Kirakovskaya
Degree: BBA in International Business, 2002
Origin: Russia
Status: Kirakovskaya has lived in Moscow since 2003 and is a consultant recruiter for the Boston Consulting Group.


Name: Simon Leykum
Degree: B.A. in English, 2002
Origin: Germany
Status: Leykum recently finished his two years of practical training to become a high school teacher in Germany.
Comment: “It’s great that ‘y’all’ keep ASU’s foreign exchange running. It was such a good experience for me to see what life in the U.S. is like if you do not live in one of the big cities.”


Name: Esther Njoga
Degree: B.S. in biochemistry, 2006
Origin: Kenya
Status: Njoga is enrolled in the Texas Tech University Health Science Center’s School of Pharmacy in Amarillo.
Comment: “I cannot describe how helpful this program was to me. I do not know how I would have gotten used to living in San Angelo without (Host parents) Jerry and Mary Wilson. They were always there whenever I needed anything and they made sure that my stay in San Angelo was smooth.”


Name: Daria Reich
Degree: B.A. in communication, 2006
Origin: Germany
Status: Reich lives in Germany and is currently working on her thesis. Upon graduation in August, she hopes to work in tourism and marketing.


Name: Julien Rousset
Origin: France
Status: Rousset finished his studies in France and Taiwan and moved to Shangai, China, to work in a major construction and engineering firm. He is currently seeking job opportunities in investment banking.


Name: Patrick Sarau
Degree: B.B.A. in international business, 2005
Origin: Germany
Status: Sarau returned to Germany to complete his master’s degree in economics. He graduated last spring and works for KPMG Germany. He lives in a village south of Hamburg.


Name: Philip Schmidtgen
Degree: B.B.A. in management, 2004
Origin: Germany
Status: Since returning to Germany, Schmidtgen has worked in marketing for Giorgio Armani and L’Oreal as well as received his master’s degree in business administration. He currently markets the “Lucky Strike” brand for British American Tobacco in Hamburg.
Comment: “Fortunately, I still keep in touch with…great people from San Angelo so I am a little bit updated with what is going on in the great State of Texas!”


Name: Jasmin Weilbacher
Degree: B.A. in journalism, 2004
Origin: Germany
Status: After graduating from ASU, Weilbacher returned to Germany and completed her master’s degree. She then enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of Hanover, received a Fulbright scholarship and is currently enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin.
Comment: “I had such a great time in Texas when I was at ASU that I decided to work on (a thesis topic) that unites both countries and that would allow me to return to Texas.”


Name: Henner Wesemann
Degree: B.A. in journalism, 2006
Origin: Germany
Status: Wesemann is in Germany working on his university diploma, which is comparable to a master’s degree, to pursue a teaching career. His majors are physical education, English as a foreign language and education.
Comment: “This (Host) program helped me to get settled in San Angelo, to contact Americans off campus, to make new friends, to learn more about American culture and to have a real family to rely on while my other one was far away.”


Name: Akash Zaveri
Degree: B.S. in computer science, 2005
Origin: India
Status: Zaveri completed his master’s degree at Carnegie Mellon in May 2007 and is currently working at Microsoft in Redmond, Wash.
