As ASU’s women’s teams evolved, the name Rams did not seem entirely appropriate and Lady Rams was, well, a contradiction of terminology and nature. Neither did the term “ewe,” pronounced “you” and the name for a female sheep of any breed.
Consequently, the search began for an appropriate name that the ASU women could go by in their athletic competitions. Ultimately, the university selected a name unique among all collegiate athletic programs nationally, the Rambelles.
Technically, of course, no such creature as a Rambelle exists anywhere except upon the playing fields and courts of ASU and anywhere else the women´s teams travel.
The Rambelles have won numerous Lone Star Conference titles over the years, reaching their highest pinnacle in 2004 when the Rambelles won the NCAA Division II National Softball Championship.
