The TSI Assessment tests are for basic reading, math and writing skills. Angelo State University administers these tests for those who need TSI compliance.
TSI was implemented to ensure that students enrolled in Texas public colleges and universities possess the necessary academic skills to succeed. TSI test scores are not used to determine admission status; however, entering students must test before enrolling in college-level courses at any Texas public institution of higher education.
Important: Students who do not have TSI test scores on file will not be allowed to register for classes, unless they are exempt. Prospective students should provide proof of an exemption or schedule to take an approved TSI test as soon as possible so that scores will be available in time for orientation and registration.
Students may be exempt from meeting TSI standards if they have met one of the criteria listed below.
ACT administered prior to February 15, 2023: composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on the English test shall be exempt for both the reading and writing sections of the TSI Assessment, and/or 19 on the mathematics test shall be exempt for the mathematics section of the TSI Assessment
ACT administered on or after February 15, 2023: a combined score of 40 on the English and Reading (E+R) tests shall be exempt for both reading and writing or ELAR sections of the TSI Assessment. A score of 22 on the mathematics test shall be exempt for the mathematics section of the TSI Assessment. There is no composite score.
SAT administered on or after March 5, 2016: A minimum score of 480 on the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing test shall be exempt for both TSI reading and writing. A minimum score of 530 on the Mathematics test shall be exempt for TSI math.
SAT administered prior to March 2016: A combined score of 1070 or higher AND at least a 500 on the Critical Reading and/or Math tests is required for the SAT TSI Exemption. If the student does not satisfy the combined requirement first, then he/she will not be eligible for this exemption.
Minimum score of 2200 on both the English and/or math sections with at least a 3 on the writing component of the 11
grade TAKS (applicable for a period of five years from the date of testing)
Note: Students must supply the TAKS essay score to the ASU Admissions Office as this score is not included on all high school transcripts.
STAAR end of course (EOC) with a minimum score of Level 2 (2000) on the English III Reading and English III Writing shall be exempt from the TSI Assessment for reading and/or writing, and a minimum score of Level 2 (4000) on the Algebra II EOC shall be exempt from the TSI Assessment required for the mathematics section.

Pursuant to TEC § 28.014 a student who successfully completes a college preparatory course may use the course at a partnering institution of higher education to meet TSI requirements. ASU will exempt a student from the TSI content area(s) for a period of twenty-four (24) months from the date of high school graduation with successful completion of the college preparatory course(s) within the respective content area. The exemption will apply only if the student enrolls in the TSI exempted content area college level course during their first semester of enrollment. This TSI exemption applies only at ASU.
ASU currently only accepts college preparatory credit form schools in San Angelo ISD and from Texas College Bridge.
You can register for the TSI Assessment at the ASU Testing Center. Those taking the test need to report to the center 30 minutes prior to their testing time. For information regarding ASU testing times and availability, contact:
