Mathematics Tenure and Promotion Guidelines
The Department of Mathematics approved and submitted these tenure and promotion guidelines on Feb. 18, 2019. They were approved by the dean on April 2, 2019, and submitted to the provost for his review.
Tenure-Track Faculty
- No accomplishment may be used to satisfy more than one criterion.
- Faculty members must provide an accompanying list of accomplishments (and documentation if requested) that correspond to the points designated in each of the evaluation areas.
- To be considered to be satisfactorily progressing toward tenure and/or promotion, a faculty member must
- receive a “Yes” on all three Mandatory Requirements.
- obtain a minimum of 4 points in each evaluation area in each academic year.
- obtain a sum of at least 24 points in each evaluation area over a three-year period.
- To be considered to be satisfactorily progressing toward tenure and promotion, first and second year tenure-track faculty must obtain a minimum of 2 points in the area of service in each of the first two years with a sum of at least 12 points in the area of service over the first three years and a sum of at least 18 points in years 2, 3 and 4.
- To be considered to be performing satisfactorily a faculty member must
- receive a “Yes” on all three Mandatory Requirements.
- obtain a minimum of 3 points in each evaluation area in each academic year.
- obtain a sum of at least 18 points in each evaluation area over a three-year period.
- In the first semester of appointment, faculty will be required to complete two observations of other instructors as outlined in the “Observing Another Instructor” departmental policy document. The department chair will observe at least one class of the faculty member during the first semester of appointment. Also, the new faculty member will complete a course review as outlined in the “Peer Organizational Analysis Review” departmental policy document after the first semester ends. In the second semester of appointment, first year faculty will allow three faculty to observe their class as outlined in “Evaluating Another Instructor” departmental policy document. Based on these first-year requirements, the Peer Review Committee may recommend that the faculty member meet with the department chair to devise a development plan.
- A faculty member who is on a modified contract may ask that the Peer Review Committee modify the points in the evaluation areas to reflect the duties of his or her contract.
- “Teach MATH 4391” is listed as a 5-point item under both Teaching and Scholarly/Creative.
- “Teach a special topics course” is listed as a 5-point item under both Teaching and Scholarly/Creative.
- Speaking at a conference is listed as:
- the 5-point item “Present at a teaching conference” under Teaching
- the 7-point item “Invited speaker at a departmentally recognized peer-reviewed conference” under Scholarly/Creative
- the 5-point item “Present at a conference” under Scholarly/Creative
- “Direct an honors thesis project” is listed as a 5-point item under both Teaching and Scholarly/Creative.
- “Develop and teach a new course at departmental request” is listed as a 5-point item under Teaching and Scholarly/Creative.
- “Develop and teach an online course at the department’s request” is listed as a 5-point item under both Teaching and Scholarly/Creative.
- “Supervise an honors by contract project” is listed as a 1-point item under both Teaching and Scholarly/Creative.
- “Teach MATH 4171 or 4181 as an unpaid overload” is listed as a 1-point item under both Teaching and Service.
- “Perform professional consulting” is listed as a 1-point item under both Scholarly/Creative and Service.
- “Publish a book/article review” is listed as a 1-point item under both Scholarly/Creative and Service.
- “Mentor a 4181 student” is listed as a 1-point item under both Teaching and Scholarly/Creative. A maximum of 4 points can be counted. The 4 (or fewer) points can be allocated between Teaching and Scholarly/Creative per the faculty member’s choice.
- “Serve as a mentor for an Undergraduate Faculty Mentored Grant” will result in 7 points under Scholarly/Creative. If it is a two semester grant, an additional 5 points may be obtained in either Teaching or Scholarly/Creative per the faculty member’s choice. If it is a one semester grant, only the 7 points may be claimed. Additionally, the faculty member does not get to count the 3-point item “Mentor student who presents at a conference or publishes a paper” under Scholarly/Creative.

Non-Tenure Track Faculty
- No accomplishment may be used to satisfy more than one criterion.
- Faculty members must provide an accompanying list of accomplishments (and documentation if requested) that correspond to the points designated in each of the evaluation areas.
- To be considered to be performing satisfactorily, a faculty member with a 24 hour teaching contract must
- receive a “Yes” on both Mandatory Requirements.
- obtain a minimum of 3 points in the teaching section in each academic year.
- maintain a sum of at least 15 points in the teaching section over a three-year period.
- obtain a minimum of 1 point in the service section in each academic year.
- maintain a sum of at least 6 points in the service section over a three-year period.
- To be considered to be performing satisfactorily a faculty member with a 30 hour teaching contract must
- receive a “Yes” on both Mandatory Requirements.
- obtain a minimum of 4 points in the teaching section in each academic year.
- maintain a sum of at least 18 points in the teaching section over a three-year period.
- obtain a minimum of 1 point in the service section in each academic year.
- maintain a sum of at least 6 points in the service section over a three-year period.
