Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for non-ASU students, and free for ASU students, Arts at ASU subscribers and ASU Activity Card holders. The ASU Auditorium is located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave. N.

Written by Williams in the late 1930s, “Not About Nightingales” was not discovered until the late 1990s, making its world premiere at the Alley Theatre in Houston in 1998. It was then nominated for the 1999 Tony Award for Best Play.

“Not About Nightingales” is a raw, sprawling dramatization of real events at a Philadelphia prison in 1937. Convicts who led a hunger strike to protest conditions were locked in a scalding cell, where four of them died. Williams gained inspiration for the play after reading newspaper accounts of the inmates who suffocated in the steamy cell. There is also a soft love story with the characters Eva, the new secretary at the prison, and Jim, a handsome inmate who works for the warden and is trying to get out on parole.

Audience Advisory: Contains strong language and violence.

The ASU box office is open 2-6 p.m. weekdays in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. For reservations and/or ticket information, call 325-942-2000.
