Jazz Ensemble Concert: “A Tribute to Maynard Ferguson”

ASU Jazz Ensemble joins famous trumpeter, Paul Stephens, for a riveting concert stacked with modern classics!

Angelo State University’s student Jazz Ensemble will be joined by a special guest trumpeter, Paul Stephens, to present its first concert of 2019.

Stephens, former lead trumpet player in Maynard Ferguson’s band, and the ASU Jazz Ensemble will recreate the exciting hits for which Ferguson is so well known, including:  

  • “Gonna Fly Now” (theme from “Rocky”)
  • “Conquistador”
  • “MacArthur Park”
  • “Chameleon”
  • “Hey Jude” 

Stephens will also be the featured artist for ASU Trumpet Day on Saturday, Feb. 23. He will present a free, public clinic and master class on playing brass instruments.

About Paul Stephens

In addition to playing with Ferguson, Stephens has performed as the lead trumpeter for numerous other well-known artists, including The Four Tops, The Temptations, Herbie Hancock, Barry Manilow, Chicago, the Boston Pops, the Hoagy Carmichael Orchestra, U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, U.S. Air Force Band and the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. He has performed on more than 40 motion picture soundtracks and currently records the trumpet parts for all the Disney Theme Parks worldwide.

About the Ensemble

The ASU Jazz Ensemble is made up of student musicians performing on saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums and vibraphone/percussion. It is directed by Trent Shuey, ASU assistant director of bands.
