ASU Prof Named Counseling Educator of Year

Dr. Lesley Casarez, an assistant professor in Angelo State University’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has been named Counseling Educator of the Year by the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA).

Casarez will be recognized in November at the TSCA’s 2015 Professional Growth Conference in Corpus Christi.

Casarez joined the ASU staff in 2010, became faculty in 2013 and was this year named the advisor for ASU’s Master of Education in guidance and counseling degree program and the school counselor professional certificate program. Under her leadership, the online guidance and counseling program has been recognized nationally by several educational resources.

Dr. Lesley Casarez Dr. Lesley Casarez She is a member of the International Society for Technology in Education, the Association of Distance Education and Individualized Learning, the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, the Southwest Educational Research Association and the Texas Counseling Association. She also is president-elect of the ASU chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.

Before joining ASU, Casarez served as a curriculum specialist for San Angelo Independent School District, as a school counselor for Reagan County ISD and as a teacher in Austin and Round Rock. She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s in curriculum and instruction at Texas State University and a master’s in counseling at Sul Ross State University and a doctorate in educational psychology at Texas Tech University.
