Theatre Program, Students Earn Honors

October 20, 2015

Angelo State University’s recent University Theatre production of “keepingabreast” has been named a Respondents’ Choice at the state Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), held Oct. 14-17 at Grayson College in Denison.

The production, directed by ASU’s Dr. William Doll, was the play of choice for the two professional respondents at the festival, which means it will be held considered for invitation to the 2016 Regional Festival. Six plays will be invited to be performed at KCACTF Region 6. The region includes college theatre programs in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Three ASU students, Sabrina Idom of Lubbock, Adam Rich of Hilton Head, S.C., and Kala Young of Breckenridge, received Irene Ryan Acting Awards and nominations to the Regional Festival. Brittani Beggs of Greenwood received a Meritorious Achievement Award for costume design.

ASU also received a Meritorious Achievement Award for support of new plays, and ASU alumnus Matt Smith, a graduate student in the University of Texas at Austin’s Master of Fine Arts program, received a Meritorious Achievement Award for scenic projections design.

University Theatre will be notified in December if “keepingabreast,” a dramatic comedy about breast cancer written by alumna Jackie Rosenfeld, will be invited to perform at the Regional KCACTF, which will be hosted by Angelo State on Feb. 24-27.

Founded in 1969, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival includes more than 600 academic institutions nationwide participating in eight regional festivals. More information is available online at the Kennedy Center Website.
