Theatre Program Earns Kennedy Center Honors

November 16, 2015

Angelo State University’s current University Theatre production of “Expecting Isabel” has been named a Respondents’ Choice by jurors for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF).

Directed by Michael Burnett, assistant professor of theatre, “Expecting Isabel” was the play of choice for two visiting professional respondents, Dean Nolen from Texas Tech University and Eric Marsh from Sam Houston State University. The comedy is ASU’s fall dinner theatre production, with performances continuing at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 19-21, in the Modular Theatre.

The Respondents’ Choice designation means the play is under consideration for invitation to the 2016 Regional KCACTF, which will be hosted Feb. 24-27 by Angelo State. ASU’s October production of “keepingabreast” has also been named a Respondents’ Choice. University Theatre will be notified in December if either or both plays will be invited to be performed at the regional festival.

Three ASU students from “Expecting Isabel,” Tessa Handlin of Lubbock, Saxon Rhoad of The Woodlands and Julia Timme of Tyler, received Irene Ryan Acting Awards and nominations to the Regional Festival. Callie Stenson of Brownwood received a Meritorious Achievement Award for projection design, and Josiah Hernandez of San Angelo received a Meritorious Achievement Award for stage management.

Founded in 1969, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival includes more than 600 academic institutions nationwide participating in eight regional festivals.

Tickets to “Expecting Isabel” are available by calling the ASU Box Office at 325-942-2000. For more information on ASU’s theatre program, call University Theatre at 325-942-2146.
