ASU Again Named in Top 50 Colleges for Hispanic Students

April 06, 2016

For the second straight year, Angelo State University has been named one of the nation’s top 50 “Best Colleges for Hispanic Students” by BestColleges.com, an online college guide that ranks institutions of higher education in a multitude of categories.

According to BestColleges.com, its rankings are based on data compiled using the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and College Navigator databases, which are maintained by the National Center for Education Statistics and based on data reported by individual institutions every year. ASU ranked No. 44 on the list of Best Colleges for Hispanic Students.

HSI STEM Logo ASU was named a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education in 2010 and was the first institution in the Texas Tech University System to receive the HSI designation. To qualify as an HSI, a university must have Hispanic enrollment that exceeds 25 percent of the undergraduate population. ASU’s initial designation was accompanied by a five-year, $3.22 million grant from the Department of Education to fund academic and educational support programs to improve retention and graduation rates for all students. In 2011, ASU received another five-year Department of Education HSI grant totaling $5.09 million to fund programs designed to increase the number of students, particularly Hispanic and low-income students, completing degrees in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

BestColleges.com also ranks individual academic programs in numerous disciplines, and ASU’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) in guidance and counseling degree program has been ranked No. 16 in the U.S. on the BestColleges.com list of “Top Online Master’s in School Counseling Programs” for 2016.

ASU’s online M.Ed. in guidance and counseling degree program has now received multiple national rankings from a variety of online college guides. Program details are available at www.angelo.edu/dept/ci/me_guidance_counseling.php.
