ASU Named a ‘Military Spouse Friendly School’

April 15, 2016

Angelo State University has been named to the inaugural list of the nation’s “Top 100 Military Spouse Friendly Schools” by Victory Media, which comprises several magazines and websites, including G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse, which serve military personnel and their families.

The 2016 Military Spouse Friendly Schools list honors the top U.S. colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military spouses as students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and after graduation. Angelo State is one of only 100 educational institutions recognized nationally with the honor and one of only five in Texas.

Dr. Brian J. May Dr. Brian J. May “We understand that the spouses of military personnel are also serving our country,” said ASU President Brian J. May. “They provide the home and family support to the soldiers, sailors and airmen who ensure our safety and security, and we take pride in honoring them by providing the academic programs and campus support services they need to get a quality ASU education.”

The institutions on the 2016 list competed for the Military Spouse Friendly School title by completing a survey of over 100 questions covering 10 categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. This same survey also led to ASU being named a “Military Friendly School” for the seventh straight year.

ASU’s Veterans Educational and Transitional Services (VETS) Center was opened in the Houston Harte University Center in 2012. The VETS Center provides enrollment and academic support for military and veteran students and their families, as well as special programs, networking opportunities, social and study areas, and a computer lab. More information on ASU’s veteran and military programs is available online at www.angelo.edu/dept/veterans/

The complete list of Military Spouse Friendly Schools is also published in the April issue of Military Spouse magazine. The only other Texas schools to make the list are Dallas Baptist University, Texas State University, University of Texas at El Paso and University of the Incarnate Word.

Victory Media is a veteran-owned business with various related publications, including G.I. Jobs, Military Spouse, Vetrepreneur and STEM Jobs magazines. The group also annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers,” “STEM Friendly Schools” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”
