A love of wine and a passion for business led the Dotson-Cervantes team to contact Peggy Hodges. They knew they wanted to start a Texas wine business and Peggy was ready to help.

Owner/Managers: Alphonse Dotson & Martha Cervantes
Nature of Business: Winery
City: Voca, TX
SBDC Business Advisor: Peggy Hodges Rosser

When entrepreneurs decide they are going to try something, one better clear the way. So was the case with the husband and wife team of Alphonse Dotson and Martha Cervantes when they decided they would create a Texas wine.

Gotos de Oro is their Muscat Canelli dessert wine. The first bottling of the wine was in 2010 with a combination of grapes including some from outside Texas. The second bottling, larger than the first run, using the grapes from their own vineyard coupled with other Texas Grapes, was bottled in the fall of 2011 bearing the TEXAS WINE label!

In order to make this second bottling a reality, the vintners Alphonse and Martha sought assistance from Angelo State University Small Business Development Center. Rural Advisor Peggy Rosser worked with them at their vineyard. “Mrs.Rosser was very helpful with the cash flow projections,” Martha said.

The cash flow projections provided the opportunity for them to secure a loan guaranty through the USDA/FSA with assistance from Mason National Bank. This enabled them to bottle the wine and begin selling it. The assistance of the SBDC will continue. “She is also helping learn some computer steps and we shall continue with more of this learning in the future,” Martha added.

The work of the SBDC helped Alphonse and Martha expand their business, saved their business and enabled them to remain the two full time employees.
