History Prof Elected to Historical Association Council

Founded in 1932, the PHA advocates and advances knowledge about the history and culture of Pennsylvania and the mid-Atlantic region. It achieves its mission by fostering the teaching and study of Pennsylvania history and culture through publishing Pennsylvania History: A Journal of Mid-Atlantic Studies, publishing a book series on historical topics of interest in partnership with Temple University Press, hosting an annual conference, and connecting and encouraging the networking of scholars. The PHA holds its annual meeting in a different Pennsylvania location each fall. 

Heineman joined ASU’s History Department faculty in 2009, serving as chair until 2014. His connection to Pennsylvania goes all the way back to 1986 when he earned his master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He participated in the Pennsylvania Area Industrial Heritage Project in 1987, served as historian for the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania from 1988-89 and was a visiting history instructor at Pennsylvania State University in 1989. He earned his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1990.  

He has also served on the editorial board of Pennsylvania History, the official journal of the PHA, and as a peer reviewer for 25 historical presses and journals, including Pennsylvania State University Press and Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. In 1999, he published a book titled “A Catholic New Deal: Religion and Reform in Depression Pittsburgh.” 

In total, Heineman has published five books, 26 essays and journal articles, nine encyclopedia entries and 48 reviews. He also received ASU’s 2014 President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor.
