Sophomore Wins Collegiate Clay Target Championship

A sophomore from Big Spring, Hughes took first place ahead of 30 other student competitors representing Baylor University, Schreiner University, Texas A&M University, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech University and Trinity University. Brady Burks of Iraan placed seventh for ASU.
Hughes also placed ninth in the Men’s International Skeet competition.
The Lower Midwest International Championships contest is a component of the ACUI Collegiate Shotgun Bowl Series. Also competing for ASU were Jacob Bird of San Angelo, Curtis Brown of Rockwall and Weston Phelps of Stanton.
The Rams Clay Target Team was established in the fall of 2015 as a registered ASU student organization. It is open to all students interested in clay target shooting. Its faculty/staff sponsor is Kurtis Neal, ASU director of human resources.
Founded in 1914 and headquartered in Bloomington, Ind., the ACUI is a nonprofit educational organization that brings together college union and student activities professionals from more than 500 schools in seven countries with a mission to build campus community. In addition to recreational competitions like clay targets, table tennis and billiards, ACUI sponsors leadership, marketing and fundraising conferences and activities.
